She is currently on 16% but they forage all day. Bugs being very high in protein, maybe there was an influx of buggies in the yard last week. Its possible.

They are back on 20% as of yesterday. Im anticipating colder weather and less buggies available.

Can the ducks lay well in winter if they go back on 18-20% protein? I have been feeding layer feed (16%) and getting an egg from each a day (4 hens).
If they can go back to 20%, will this enable laying and help with keeping warmer in winter. I am upper Midwest- WI. Will it hurt them to go back on higher protein for the cold winter months?

I have never heard that it would hurt them in any way. Mine forage for bugs a lot, that is adding pure protein in their diet in the summer. In the winter they dont get the bugs so I up the protein in their feed. It is only a dollar or so difference in price and I think It will help their balance. In addition, I am trying to keep fresh greens in their diet choices. That is a bit more difficult.
Do what makes sense to you. This is my first year with ducks and Im learning as I go.

HOLY DUCK EGG! that is a thing of beauty! tbevans!
I saw that first pic and figured it had to be a turkey or even ostrich egg. LOL Makes sense that it was a 4yo hand ;-)

Lol!! I was trying to get a good pic to be able to tell the size and my son kept saying "I wanna hold it mama" so I was like ok hold out your hand..to my surprise it was as big as his hand so I had to take a pic! Haha!! I collected both of these double yolk eggs yesterday the bigger one is the one my son was holding.

Anyone else have experience with going back to higher protein food for winter? I have read to give corn, oats, kitty food... Looking to keep them warm, laying and healthy (and not to get overweight).
Thanks!

Pearl layed the biggest egg I've ever seen yesterday.

Left to right: Jumbo chicken egg (2.5oz), Pearl's normal egg (3oz), and yesterday's monstrosity (4.7oz)
