I have been a loyal Home Depot customer for many years, and still am, but lately I seem have been getting more misses on my interactions with them.

I bought into the Ryobi 18v One+ tool line over 15 years ago, and for a homeuser/DIYer, they have been great tools. I have never had a single Ryobi tool fail me before the warranty period expired. I have worn out a few Ryobi tools, but only years after the warranty period was up. So, great for Home Depot and the Ryobi tools. Unfortunately, it seems all the great Ryobi tool sales are now few and far between. Anybody know if this is just a result of the whole COVID situation, or is this going to be the norm from now on?

Recently, I got a new Home Depot consumer credit card (you are allowed 3 HD cards). Anyway, it's been nothing but a problem. I was supposed to get $25.00 off my first purchase with the billing, but that did not happen. So I called the credit card company and they told me that nobody had entered the $25.00 credit, but that they would now and I should see the credit in 2-3 billing cycles.

I attempted to link my new HD credit card to my years long HD account, where you can manage all your cards and set up autopayments, etc... For some reason(s), my new card cannot be linked to my existing account. I have spent about 2 hours, online, on the phone, and in the store trying to get this situation corrected, but still the problem remains.

The Home Depot online chat used to be (a few years ago) very helpful. It's not anymore. I spent 30 minutes on line trying to get somewhere on my new credit card situation but that was a total waste of time.

Even something as simple as trying to make a change in my telephone number turned out to be a Herculean task. I recently canceled our landline telephone and now just have a new cell phone. I tried to update my new phone number, but the autobot for HD insisted on sending me a verification text for the change - to my now canceled landline that could not receive texts - and when that could not happen, everything just errored out. Who wrote that program to call/text your old telephone number to verify that you have a new telephone number?

:old I know I'm old, but I do miss the days when you could call customer service and someone there was trained well enough to assist you. I have come to hate lots of these idiot autobots that just err out when something does not fit their programming.

Anyways, I'm going to leave on some positive notes for HD. I went into town today and talked to one of our local customer reps, a nice lady who has been there for years. She was there when I put in the initial order for my tools on the new credit card and was aware that I was concerned about the whole $25.00 credit not being honored. I specifically mentioned that to her when I picked up the order in the store. So, today, about a month later, my $25.00 credit had never been entered into the system, my new credit card cannot be linked to my existing account, etc... I asked her to relay my concerns to her management so maybe someone, somewhere, will attempt to improve our customer experience. She said she would, and for today, she told me that she would give me a $25.00 credit on any purchase.

I found a $120.00 microwave oven on clearance for $71.00 and when I checked out with her, she said she would knock off the $25.00 credit I was due and an additional $5.00 for, just because. So I left Home Depot with a new $120.00 microwave oven paying only $41.00. What's not to like about that?

BTW, BYC forums sometimes has ads for Home Depot. Those sales might not be available in your local store. However, I printed the BYC page with the ad and brought it to the store, and they honored the online ad, which saved me about $20 on the item I bought. That was nice.

Just rambling tonight. Would love to hear anybody else's HD experience and if you have noticed a change good/bad in their service.

This is why I don't shop at home depot.

To Customer Service,

I would like to register an official complaint regarding your company policy regarding gift cards and my customer service experience document #5164726.

On June 18th of this year, I purchased a gift card for $500 so my contractor could purchase supplies. He lost the card, so I went to my local Home Depot in $town$ (#1382) on June 23rd to report the loss. I spoke with a manager who took me to a workstation and found the record of the sale of the gift card and verified that it had not been used since the latest receipt which I provided showing a balance of $105 plus some change. She told me that the gift card would be cancelled and that a replacement gift card would be sent to me by mail. She took my card with my contact information and kept my receipt. I regret that I did not get her name.

On July 11th, I still had not received my replacement gift card, so I called the store and spoke with another manager. He told me that he was not familiar with the transaction, and that he would contact me by the next afternoon at the latest. Again, I neglected to get his name, and I never heard back from him.

On July 21st, I still had not heard back, so I called the store one more time. I left my name and phone number with an associate, and was called back later by $RepName$. I was then told that she had no record of my report. At this point, my project has been delayed for almost a month, and I just wanted to get my credit card refunded so I could purchase the supplies to finish my project. Darlene told me that I would need to contact Customer Care to request that.

I called Customer Care and spoke with a representative who called $RepName$ and spoke with her while keeping me on hold for over ten minutes. I provided my information again, and was told that they would have to contact me back. I asked for a resolution that day since I had already been waiting for almost a month.

Over three hours later, I called the store back and asked for $RepName$. I was put on hold, and I waited for ten minutes on hold before giving up and calling Customer Care again. When I called Customer Care, I was put on hold again. Five minutes later, I was transferred back to the main menu, then cut off. I called back again. I was again put on hold for about five minutes, then the agent I spoke with told me that the Home Depot gift cards are just like cash. If they are lost, they are not replaced. At this point I requested to speak with a supervisor. I was transferred to $SupervisorName$. She informed me that it is store policy to not refund a gift card, ever, even if you have proof of purchase and proof that the gift card has not been used since it was reported lost. I was offered a “one time customer service special credit” for $105, but my customer service experience has been so bad, that I no longer wish to shop at your stores. I am lucky enough to have an OSH and a Lowe’s nearby, so I don’t have to. I would like to have the remaining amount on the lost gift card credited back to my credit card, and this is my last hope to get my money back.

I understand that mistakes happen. The first manager may have been misinformed, but my consequent five contacts were all handled just as badly. As it is, I have spent a month waiting for a replacement gift card that was never coming, and as a consequence my home project has been delayed. It has been delayed even more now that over 20% of my materials budget is gone.

Thank you for your time,

@Nabiki , sorry to hear your story. I still will shop at Home Depot, but I truly wish they could improve their customer service overall. A few comments on your post...

I could already imagine this issue in my mind. Gift cards, in general, are gifts to the store. They know a certain number of people will lose their cards and never try to get any money back, meaning the company gets to reap 100% profit on that lost card and money.

I regret that I did not get her name.

Again, I neglected to get his name, and I never heard back from him.

Yeah, I always write down the customer service rep name. In fact, if I expect a problem, I will ask the rep to spell out their name so they know I'm writing it down on my notes. I find it best to ask them their name before you get into your request. In my experience, the reps seems to be a bit more helpful when they know you took down their name for your notes.

Also, I think I had success with my local store HD rep because she has worked there for many years and I let her watch me there at the counter write down her name and what she said. In fact, after I jotted down my note on the paper, I read it back to her and asked her if my note was accurate. In this recent case, she said she would give me store credit herself for $25.00 if HD credit card failed to post the $25.00 credit. So, a month later, I went back to her with my papers in hand and there was no problem for her to give me the $25.00 credit which she promised at our last encounter.

Again, talking to a real person in the store is much better than talking to a customer service rep on the phone. What are the chances will you ever get that same rep on the phone again? Probably nil.

Home Depot gift cards are just like cash. If they are lost, they are not replaced.

This is why I don't buy gift cards, in general, from any store. The one exception is that I buy gift cards, for myself, at our local Fleet store because that is where I buy my chicken feed. But I treat my Fleet gift cards like cash and keep them in my wallet with my cash. The only reason I buy our Fleet gift cards is that they have twice a year specials for 10% off on the purchase of a gift card. So, I will buy a $100 gift card but only pay $90.

And then I wait for the chicken feed to go on sale, and purchase it with my gift card to get an extra 10% off!

I was offered a “one time customer service special credit” for $105, but my customer service experience has been so bad, that I no longer wish to shop at your stores.

You know, I think they finally did the right thing. If they had done that from the start, you would have had a very different experience. We all know that they can track those gift cards, cancel them, and reissue the balance on another card very easily - if they wanted to do that. But, like I said, they know/hope that a certain % of their gift cards will be lost which means they make 100% on that unused money.

I still think Home Depot is a good store to shop, despite my recent complaint. But a bad customer service interaction with the company can really put a person off.

Last year I bought a 15 year warranty shovel with plastic scoop from Menards. The plastic cracked in the winter from the freezing cold temps - the shovel was just sitting in the shed in storage. So I went to exchange it, and was told by the "manager" that they will replace the shovel, but that if I bring back more broken shovels they can refuse to replace it! What! I said, is there a 15 year warranty on this product or not? She said there was indeed a 15 year warranty on the item, but if I returned others they could refuse to exchange the broken shovel for a new one. In that case, I think the "manager" was just an idiot. When I brought the shovel to the customer service counter for exchange, they could care less and gave me a new shovel without a problem.

As it is, I have spent a month waiting for a replacement gift card that was never coming, and as a consequence my home project has been delayed. It has been delayed even more now that over 20% of my materials budget is gone.

:idunno Yeah, I got my new HD credit card to save $25.00 promo on a purchase. Eventually, I got the $25.00, but I have already put in about 2 hours of time trying to get this new card linked into my HD account. So was my 2 hours of time worth the $25.00? Not if I was working on the clock for someone else.

Well, I still shop Home Depot because I have more hits than misses with them. But, lately, I think their customer service has gone downhill. Not so much the customer service at our local store, but if you have to deal online with HD, then stand by for an adventure. In my experience, the local customer service reps have been able to help me whereas I get nowhere with HD online, or by phone.

Thanks for your post.

As you can see, they did cancel the gift card. 🤷‍♀️

It isn't just recently that their customer services has declined. My experience happened many years ago, and as a result, they lost many years of my business. As a home owner, that actually adds up to a rather lot of money. Now that I'm building a new home, it's adding up to even more.

I've always had very poor service in store as well. I remember one time actually having to jump up and down waving to get someone's attention. If I go in with a man, I get help. If I go in alone, no one comes near me unless I just about grab them by the shirt. (Not literally, I wouldn't do that).

Unfortunately, I can see that happening in most tool stores. Women are probably not seen as potential serious shoppers at a tool store. On the other hand, if I go into a clothing store, I won't get any help because they assume I'm waiting for my wife. Which, in most cases, is the truth for me.

:old Not all men are enlightened.! On the other hand, I have never seen a woman salesperson in our tools section of the local Home Depot, and I think that does not help you, either. :tongue

Our local Menards has both men and women in the tools/hardware department, but none of them know anything about the tools they sell. Most of them rotate in and out of Menards really fast. Our local Home Depot actually has retired contractors as salesmen in their tools department. They tend to stay at the store much longer and are much more helpful.

Yep. I had a bad experience with a local plumber shop and I have not used them again in over 30 years. They would be my very last call, and yet, I know they guy I had the bad experience with probably left that company 25 years ago. I like to think I don't hold a grudge, but maybe I do. I have received good service from the other plumbers I now use and I just won't go back to that other company.

Thanks' for the warning. I won't be buying any gift card's from there.

I think you might find the Gift Card policy at Home Depot is pretty much the same as any other store. That is why I don't buy gift cards - except for myself at our local Fleet store (at 10% discount) where I get my chicken supplies.

BTW, did you know that some gift cards at some stores have a declining balance if you don't use them within a certain period of time? It's in the fine print. But that unused $50 gift card might only have a remaining balance of $40 next year! Just another way to gift themselves your money. Buyer beware! If you get a gift card from someone, use it as soon as you can.

Well, I have only bought gift card's for Amazon, or some restaurant's.

I think if you lost a gift card for a restaurant, you would never get any money back.

Amazon gift cards, that I have used, are tracked online so I don't know if they could ever be lost. I don't buy Amazon Credit cards, but sometimes a refund situation will result in an Amazon Gift card and maybe not a direct refund. I think I've also received Amazon gift cards online as a promo for making a certain purchase, or choosing a slower shipping option. However, some of the Amazon gift cards have a limited time to use before they expire. If you choose the slower shipping option for digital gift card credits, I think you have 30 days to use it or lose it.
