Emily woke to a familiar voice calling her name. It was Dean, the bodiless entity that had been with her since the accident that took her parents lives. Her foster parents wouldn't listen when she insisted he was real, and not just a voice in her head. "We have to get out of here" Dean said. "They are planning to do terrible things to the residents." Emily rose from a chair in the corner of the room where she had fallen asleep last night, and walked to the only window in the room. "How are we supposed to get out? There are bars on the windows and the guards lock us in at night. I don't even know where we are, all I see is forest. I heard the nurses talking about the forest and they said they were terrified to go out there. I wonder what is out there." Just then, the sound of Emily's door unlocking made her jump. She turned from the window to face the door. "Ah, Emily, you're awake. Time for breakfast" said the nurse as she entered the room carrying a tray. The nurse set the tray down on the table, took a quick look around the room, and left, locking the door behind her. Emily walked to the table and looked at the tray. "Ugh! Not oatmeal again" Emily sighed. There were also 2 orange slices, a glass of milk, and a flimsy plastic spoon on the tray. Emily's stomach gave out a loud growl. "Well, I guess I better eat something." Emily sat and stirred through the oatmeal. It looked the same as it did everyday since she arrived at the homeless shelter. The first bite was bland as always but slightly metallic tasting today. Emily dismissed the thought and continued eating. With her growling belly now silent, she went into the bathroom to relieve herself. As she sat on the cold hard seat, she looked around the bathroom at the familiar walls until something caught her eye, something she hadn't noticed before. It was small, round, and shiny like glass, and up in the corner of the room on the edge of the crown moulding. "I wonder what that could be" Emily thought. Her bladder fully emptied, she stood and washed her hands at the sink. She looked at the small object while she dried her hands on the crinkly brown paper towels. "They see..." The voice made her jump. "Dean! You know I don't like it when you follow me into the bathroom" Emily said. Emily stood on the toilet to get a closer look at the object on the wall. She reached out to touch it, when a loud boom coming from the other side of the wall made her fall off of the toilet. She rose from the floor rubbing her now sore derriere. "Dean, is that a camera? Are they watching me?" Emily asked. "They come..." replied Dean. There was a knock on the bathroom door. "Emily, are you alright?" said the nurse. " I heard a loud bang." "Yes, I'm ok. I slipped and fell on the wet floor" Emily lied as she opened the bathroom door. "Good. It's time to go see Dr. Mythe for your exam" said the nurse. "Why do I need an exam?" asked Emily. "All residents get an exam to ensure everyone is healthy. We can't have sickness and disease spreading throughout the building" the nurse replied. Emily followed the nurse out of the room and down the hallway. The walls of the hallway were covered in burgundy wallpaper with a gold floral pattern, and there was black carpet underfoot. Many doors lined the long dimly lit hallway. They stopped at a door numbered 102. "The Dr will be in shortly, go inside and wait for him" said the nurse. Emily entered into the room and noticed the lack of furnishings. It looked nothing like her room. This room was lighted by a single ornate lamp, sitting on a dark wooden desk. There was an empty leather high backed chair behind the desk, and a smaller chair in front of it. The walls were bare except for another door in the wall behind the desk. Emily sat in the small chair and waited nervously for the Dr.
