Janette leaned forward from where she now sat on the edge of the desk. "Because to save thousands, you always have to sacrifice a few. Always." She straightened. "I learned that early on. My parents, I assume you know, were always at some fundraiser or another to raise money for the homeless, sick and dying. I was their sacrifice," she said seriously. "I barely knew them, they hardly knew me."

"That is very unfortunate." Thomas said and sighed. "I never can understand why a parent has a child, and then doesn't care to pay them any attention." He paused.
"But yes, you are correct, there always must be a sacrifice in some form."

Janette nodded. She felt a little bit guilty for the fact that she rarely ever thought about them. But then, when had they ever thought about her?
This seemed a good opportunity to ask about him. "And you? What about your parents?" She asked.

"Well, my original mother was rather irresponsible. She was 19, very young, and had me after she left her husband to go along her own path. She never went to collage, so she didn't have enough money for two people. Instead of putting me up for adoption or trying to work harder, she just kept me but didn't care for me all she could. Once I was old enough to walk and talk she completely ignored me, and thought of me like I was just an infestation, so I left. Lived on the streets for a while, and then a couple took me in." Thomas paused to quickly think about the rest of his past, to make sure he remembered it all. Then continued.

"They were very kind, and as I grew up they said I had a brilliant mind. I was given the best education, and I was very grateful for it. But whenever I was older, almost ready to move out of the house, I told them about my wishes and predictions. The world would end, I wanted to save the human race the best I could...And it did involve experimentation. At first they just thought it was animals, but when I said I wanted live people they worried about my mental state. So, after a long while of discussing this they finally thought I was completely insane and tried to put me in a mental hospital. I was scared, and I didn't want to waste my life being looked at like a mad man, so I tried to convince them to forget about it. They wouldn't, and when my mother picked up the telephone I killed her. I didn't want any witnesses, so I had to kill my father as well...
I managed to make it look like somebody else came in and killed them. I was always great at using logic and solving things, so I knew how to make the whole situation have no chance of pointing to me. I was put up for adoption, but I was 17 and so less than a year later I was able to leave and move on with my life. I still regret killing them, they were very kind, but I wanted to do more than sit in an asylum. I wanted to live, and they threatened to take that from me because of an idea, and because of the way my mind worked. My original mother didn't care, and my adopted parents didn't want me."

Thomas sighed, seeming rather angry about his past, but didn't seem sad about it. He had never told anyone he actually killed his parents, he just said they were dead, but he thought it best not to lie if he trusted Janette to be his assistant.

Janette didn't know what she was expecting him to say, but certainly not all that he now poured out. She was a tiny bit sorry for the foster parents but anger at him was far from her mind. "We're just going to have to prove your theory right, make their sacrifice worth it," she said determinedly.

(I love how you said Emily's history was really sad, but you say nothing about everything that Thomas just said. XD)

"Yes. And we definitely will. I will soon have that ability, to do what I wanted to do long before this time." He said, feeling very confident about all this.

( )

Despite not saying much in reply to Thomas's long, tragic story, Janette certainly thought about it. But now Thomas was saying something so she put aside those thoughts for now. "You deserve a celebratory glass of champagne the day your virus is perfected," she stated. "Or now, since you have perfected other things," she grinned.

"Ha. Not so sure I really do." Thomas said and looked at Janette curiously, "What have I perfected?" He inquired. If the virus wasn't perfected yet, he couldn't really think of anything else he could have done.

"Well, maybe not perfected, but look at what you've built," Janette waved her arm around the room. "This place, for one thing. Even if you haven't reached the goal yet, at least you pursued your dream. Are pursuing." She said in a dramatic tone.

Thomas thought about what she had said. She was right about all of that. And he was doing something no one else had thought of, and was managing to continue the human race. Even if it wasn't perfected now, it would be.

"Yes, you are right. And I have worked hard to do this all. None of this has been easy." Thomas said honestly.
