Home-grown Meatbird ideas.....

I only ask that if you establish a Cornish x Dorking cross that you promise to refer to the chicks as "Corkings."

oh man,
I wish you all wouldn't talk about chickens in the meat way!

Now I'm hungry!
I wish I could get hubby to agree to meat birds. MMH sent me an extra delaware Roo and yesterday I said in front of DH Whitey if you don't be nice your going to dinner and DH got all upset with me. Gave me the look(shocked) and NOOOO.
He's so cute my little tender bear.

(day 19) Yummy coming in the future. I am working on a pretty, duel purpose flock. I like the interest of having different birds, but function counts too. You all are such a wealth of knowledge.

Dorks and Corkings... I like it.

I will have to wait until Spring to get some Dark Cornish unless someone has some chicks they're willing to ship? (or eggs).

Agreed

I have either some Buff Cornish or Dark Cornish roosters on the way. I can't remember which. I sort of prefer the Buffs but I remember something about them being sold out for the year.

Yeah... I checked a couple of the hatcheries, and they're very limited now. Too late in the season, and hubby will KILL me if I order 24 more meat birds just to get my one cornish roo...

It sounds like you need to get a new breed. That way you're not buying meat birds, you're buying essential stock for your next breeding flock

Well, the one dark cornish would be for my meat bird project, the others just to fill the order with "expendable" birds... I already have way too many other birds to justify long-term birds...

Corkings! I love it. I wonder what people would think if I said "Well, I have some Corkings for sale, they're good eatin."

What are we having for dinner?

Ok...newbie stupid question here, but why would the Dark Cornish need to be the roo? I have a pullet that turned out to be a Dark Cornish, and I was hoping to breed her and use the babies for eating. Are the hens too big for the other roos? Or do they not set well? I have a bantam that she babies. They were brooder mates, and the bantam sleeps up underneath her! LOL! So, I think she'll be a good mom.

Anyway, I was just wondering why. I don't mean to hijack the thread!
