You could glue a heat sink off a pc prosser to the thermostat to help it read the temperature change faster but really, trying deferent bulb sizes is all I have left you could try

Just a small clarification - you need to wire them in parallel to get the backup effect. I wanted to add that for first time DIY'ers like me. I had to sit and diagram it all out to get it right, and figure out the difference in wiring in serial versus parallel.
