I was reading through all the posts wondering when someone would bring up maybe giving them some work in exchange for letting them keep a tent on the edge of the property. If it was someone that I knew that happened on hard times I wouldn't hesitate, but they seem too creepy to even approach with a proposal like that. Hope the police can help you out of this.

For the last 6 months there were some houseless folks living under cover of trees in the fields across the road. They seemed harmless enough so everyone let them be. The law ended up removing them after they got busted with goods from a string of business break-ins.

I think there's very few people, with the M.O. that your thieves have displayed, that truly do not know right from wrong...sure seems like the ones do that have broken into and damaged your property...or else why not 'innocently' break into locked doors of luxury hotels for some nice accommodations, or blatently stroll in and out of wallyworld with arms full of blankets or camping gear? And why not hang around after waking up, stretching and yawning to say 'mornin' to you after a nice slumber? Nope, I think they know how to get gone and pick their targets for the least chance of being caught, and that shows culpability.

All the best with your situation so you can feel, and be, safe again.

Liability issues. Plus, once you give permission for them to stay, they are probably legally protected in many more ways. You'd definitely get into having to evict them legally in order to make them move if you changed your mind about the arrangement later. Plus, given the variety of minimum wage laws plus other employment laws, it might not even be legal...

Well, it seems that their self granted entitlements to your property are escalating. They went from taking food to sleeping in an unused building to breaking into a used and locked building. I hope the police are able to get there while they are still trespassing and can remove them. Hopefully they will get some help (and accept it) and that will be the end of it. Good luck!

Your "problem" is fascinating. I guess I always thing urban when I think of the homeless (which is DUHHHH on my part - why would there only be homeless in city areas?).

I would put up "No Trespassing" signs immediately - everywhere. I would also contact the authorities.

Folks in this situation probably know right from wrong, but perceptions of right/wrong become blurred when hunger, thirst, need for shelter, etc. figure into one's world. You can know that stealing is wrong. But when you're hungry, or your mate or child is hungry, and there's an apple, or a loaf of bread, or whatever just sitting there (whether in a garden or in a presumably empty kitchen), the "right" thing to do isn't always clear. How far might a person go to provide for his/her family, even if they are providing through less than ethical means? You need to safeguard your own family first, by contacting the appropriate authorities. In doing so, these folks will be offered assistance in varied forms. Whether they accept this assistance or not is beyond anyone's control but their own...

the police removed them a little after midnight last night. the only building not locked up good was the pig house...the couple was up in the rafters yelling their heads off. our sow is about 400 pounds and runs at everything with mouth open, i use to be afraid of her now i just respect her. the pig pen has no gate the pig house has no door, no way to keep pig back while officers got the couple, had to just use feed and a cattle panel to keep the pig backed into a corner of the pen and hope she was willing to stay in the corner, she didnt like being closed in her house at night is why it has no door, with no gate we just climb threw between the wire if we need in, not so easy to do with unwilling people so we just said to heck with it and cut a section of wire so the police could just get them out of here. have no ideal what the police will do with them, i just hope they understand loud and clear to not be here and if they have any friends hope they also get the ideal. if they arent afraid or respectful of police or laws then i maybe they will remember miss sow, they seemed to understand her language well. sorry took me a little while to post back but had to do middle of the night fence repair and then sleep. we'll be keeping everything locked up good. hope there is never a next time but better safe. didnt laugh til they were gone but it was funny to me after they were gone and the fence repaired. i could just see them snuggleing down in a nice hay bed and then miss sow finding them in HER bed. wouldnt have been nearly as funny if they hadnt gotten out of her reach though. a sow as big as her i am sure could do a lot of damage if not kill.

Well I'm glad to hear that they were removed. I would definitely keep in touch with the police to find out where they are, what's going on, etc. Did the police try to get you to file any charges of any sort?

I am so glad that everything went well. Hopefully they will not be back and you will have piece of mind. Think of your pig as a guard pig. LOL
