Homemade flock block recipes

The ingredients listed on the forage block is corn syrup and gelatin. I am guessing those are the binders.

I did a mix of all your guys' recipes plus made up my own, and I have a yummy smelling flock block in the oven!

These are our treat blocks before they went into the oven, this is the first time making them hopefully our girls like them.
how do you know when they are done?

I just used sweet feed, regular scratch, raisins, bread and an egg. I placed a mason jar in the middle to make a ring and put it in the microwave at 5 minute intervals for 20 minutes. My chickens were scared of it lol! I hope they finally eat it!

I make my own homemade "mini" blocks every weekend for my girls and they love them. Save all of your eggshells from the week (about 2 dozen in our house) and incorporate them to add in calcium for better shell quality. If you "roast" the eggshells they will crush more easily, and you'll also kill any surface bacteria they may harbor. To roast them, I just toss the all in a 13 x 9 metal pan, stick it in the oven and turn it on to heat up to 400*F. When it hits temperature, the shells will be ready to crush. It's easy to crush them in the pan - the sides help to keep them contained. I use a meat tenderizer to crush the shells into tiny pieces. So... the recipe is sort of flexible:

About 2 -3 cups of ground cornmeal mix - the big bags of "masa" from the discount food store in the hispanic section works great.
If you have any leftover grits, toss 'em in....
About 1/3 -1/2 cup of oil - I don't really measure it, just splash it in
Any leftover veggies that the girls didn't already eat during the week, chopped up fine
The crushed up eggshells
2-3 eggs, to bind it together
Water.... as much as you need to get a good consistancy - like thick pudding

I spoon this into muffin cups and bake for about 15 minutes at 400*F - After 15 minutes I turn off the oven and just let them cook and continue to bake in the oven.

About 1 muffin for every 3-4 birds per day is a good rule of thumb. They love them, peck at them and roll them around... as the other Martha would say, "it's a good thing".

I saw a chicken block at the feed store yesterday that actually "hangs" like a suet block. I think I'll experiment with something like that to hang a few of them around. Maybe adding peanut butter will help it to be less crumbly. Rainy day, good time to experiment.

We had a chicken hawk take one of my girls yesterday, so I have everyone incarcerated today - it might help them to not be so frustrated. Only 10 chickens in a 20 x 60 foot area... it's not a bad jail! :)

I would like to also make my own flock block. If you have a good receipe for one please friend me with it. Just bought 2 - 2 1/2 month old Buff Orpingtons and 2 - month old HRIR's , and I have 1-- 2 + year old Buff and 1-- 2+ year old HRIR and they love the Flock block.

Oh my goodness, what a great idea! That way you can hang it so they will have so much fun with it. I demand your chickens to eat it NOW!
