I make my own homemade "mini" blocks every weekend for my girls and they love them. Save all of your eggshells from the week (about 2 dozen in our house) and incorporate them to add in calcium for better shell quality. If you "roast" the eggshells they will crush more easily, and you'll also kill any surface bacteria they may harbor. To roast them, I just toss the all in a 13 x 9 metal pan, stick it in the oven and turn it on to heat up to 400*F. When it hits temperature, the shells will be ready to crush. It's easy to crush them in the pan - the sides help to keep them contained. I use a meat tenderizer to crush the shells into tiny pieces. So... the recipe is sort of flexible:
About 2 -3 cups of ground cornmeal mix - the big bags of "masa" from the discount food store in the hispanic section works great.
If you have any leftover grits, toss 'em in....
About 1/3 -1/2 cup of oil - I don't really measure it, just splash it in
Any leftover veggies that the girls didn't already eat during the week, chopped up fine
The crushed up eggshells
2-3 eggs, to bind it together
Water.... as much as you need to get a good consistancy - like thick pudding
I spoon this into muffin cups and bake for about 15 minutes at 400*F - After 15 minutes I turn off the oven and just let them cook and continue to bake in the oven.
About 1 muffin for every 3-4 birds per day is a good rule of thumb. They love them, peck at them and roll them around... as the other Martha would say, "it's a good thing".
I saw a chicken block at the feed store yesterday that actually "hangs" like a suet block. I think I'll experiment with something like that to hang a few of them around. Maybe adding peanut butter will help it to be less crumbly. Rainy day, good time to experiment.
We had a chicken hawk take one of my girls yesterday, so I have everyone incarcerated today - it might help them to not be so frustrated. Only 10 chickens in a 20 x 60 foot area... it's not a bad jail!
