we were supposed to get several more, but only one was available. So we are going to raise this one on its own until we know the sex, and then get it a mate. It is a miniature silver appleyard. I am going to teach it to swim, and let it live with the chickens.

Cherlyn,

HOW are YOU going to teach the duck to swim?

Do YOU have "webbed-feet"?

I had a girlfriend in High School who had webbed-toes. (She was a few days late in "hatching".) She was a good swimmer in High School! (But she walked like a duck.)

LOL!

Point taken!

Ok, how about, "I will supervise and instruct the duck whilst he swims"? Show him the pool, show him the little island in the middle of the pool where he can rest... stuff like that. Add perhaps my chicks will take an interest and try to swim with him. Doubt that will happen more than once, though.

PS And my uncle has webbed toes - mine are very slightly webbed between the big toe and second toe. So perhaps that will be on my side, should I choose to take the duckling to a swimming pool.

Cherlyn,

That is GOOD that your toes are "slightly "webbed"!

I was going to suggest "swim-fins".....but apparently that will be unnecessary.

Have a "swimmingly" GOOD TIME!!!

P.S. A neighbor of mine told me 2 days ago that he got some mallards. I asked, "Mallards or Rouens ?" He said: "Mallards" I said "They will fly away." He said that he trimmed their wings.
