Homemade incubator questions

That's a huge difference in temps from wiggler and air. It sounds like your fan is insufficient. But in reality it doesn't matter as long as your eggs are at same level as the wiggler. Thinking hot air rises and fan isn't circulating well enough for more even temp, but again it doesn't matter as long as eggs are at same level as the wiggler.

For humidity I like 40% first 18 days then 60% last 3 days. Opinions vary and through your own experimenting you'll find what works best for you. Humidity is a function of surface area of water. First calibrate your hygrometer (google salt test) then use varying sizes of cups/dishes to see what it takes to get the humidity your after. For me it only takes a double shot glass of water to maintain 40% because we use a humidifier in the room (still heating season so countering dry air all winter). Then I only need to replace that with a glass tumbler to maintain 60%. The amount of water (surface area) you'll need depends on amount of air circulation your incubator has and your RH of room it's in.

On side note, do make sure your incubator circulates clean air. CO2 build up is lethal to embryos.developing.

I didn't give the wiggler enough time to get up to temperature. Now they're staying within 2 degrees of each other. Air - 97, Wiggler - 99 no fluctuations.

I also added a second water wiggler. I used an empty bottle of contact solution, which is about the same size as a large egg. I think I'll leave this one in the incubator for my first hatch, because it doesn't leak. The zip lock bags leak, even if I triple bag them.

FYI- for the internal probe, we used one of those gel packs you freeze and put in shipments of cold stuff. We just wrapped the gel pack around the probe and fixed with rubber band- it worked a great

I hatched out chicks last month, but I wanted a smaller bator so I made this one- 8''x9'' box 15w bulb.

the metal bowl is for safety, not water, and the light also has a heat shield, 15w doesn't get very hot, but I thought I would point it out to people who want to tell me my beezness. been doing this for ever.

anywho, heat holds very well 100' and no cold spots.
