Homemade predator repellant...

LOL It was just like cooking dinner, because I use so many hot peppers in everything. (I actually have a six year old son who eats tobasco sauce on his tacos, because he wants to eat hot sauce like mommy and daddy!) I usually do it on a nice day when I can have windows and doors open to vent, just to keep the kids eyes from getting irritated but it hasn't really been a problem so far. Now... the day I drop the pot or bottle and spill it and have to figure out how to clean it up without burning my own nose and/or eyes should be interesting!

Kinda like putting up a high fence around your property or bars on your windows to keep criminals out of your house.Might be better to get rid of the criminal before he learns a new way in or starts bringing his buddies along with him.

We've reinforced our entire coop, so I don't think (*fingers crossed*) anything can get in. The newest part of the coop we built this weekend is a breeding pen and has a concrete reinforced base all the way around. We dug down a foot and set the posts then filled in concrete around the wooden base as well. We also have dual layers of wire with a 2 to 3 inch gap in between the layers. Saw lots of coon pawprints investigating the new coop area, but as we haven't put anything in that side yet we didn't have to worry. The main coop and the other breeding pen are the same so hopefully, after I put out the new batch of repellant- we'll all be safe and happy! :)

We had a problem with racoons getting our hens and then a bobcat got 6 in one night. I started trying to come up with a way to keep the chickens safer without spending a fortune, and made my own repellant that has been working for the last six months. We grow a lot of habanero and jalapeno and other hot peppers, so I boil them with cut up onions and chili powder in a massive chili pot. Put it in a huge spray bottle and spray about a foot out from the coop and bingo- no more predators. We even sat out there the first night we put it out and watched a raccoon burn his nose on it and scamper off while desperatly rubbing his nose and sneezing. Was highly amusing! :) And its cheep since we grow the peppers and onions ourselves. I keep a gallon or so in a big plastic bottle and just reaplly every few days. Anyone else make their own repellant to use around a chicken coop to keep predators away? Interested in other recipies in case they become immune to this one (doubtful, but just to be prepared!).
You can boil garlic too along with onions and peppers! Oh this post is 10 years old😂
