Homemade water heater

SOOO glad you took out the 160w ! I almost chocked when I saw that.
Maybe you can put 2 slabs on the bottom ?

Another good stone to use is Soapstone, keeps heat longer and won't break under the heat. They can be expensive though, they are used on wood stove heaters ;)

I use a regular light bulb inside a cookie tin: https://the-chicken-chick.com/make-cookie-tin-waterer-heater-under-10/ but I've also seen the same thing done inside a cinderblock. It is wise to block under it with bricks or similar, so that the wood doesn't get hot. The trough seems so deep, I think you would have problems keeping it thawed completely - you could try placing rocks or brick pieces in it, big enough to rise above the water level.

When you say block under ir with bricks, do you mean what I already have or add more?

It was a warmish day today and the rock underneath got warmer and heated the straw. I put some tile on every corner to levitate it so some air can get down there.
