Homemade Waterer.....With 5 gallon bucket???

Quote:
I use the 5 gal buckets for feeders. I drill 5 - 2.5 inch holes around the bucket at higher than mid level. Then fill the bucket to the bottom of the holes. The chickens reach in to eat they cannot scratch the food out, and if it rains the lid and the shape of the bucket keep the food dry.

You may need to use several buckets for a large flock, but they are free. Use one uncut bucket to fill the feeders.

Great idea for feeders. I'm trying to collect enough buckets so I just have to feed/water once a week.

Thanks.

Yes you can do the same only cut bigger holes. I made this also and so far it works great it just the waterer I had a little trouble with but next time I will use way less holes lol.....

Does anyone have finer details of the light bulb, extension cord, cinder block heating on this project?Would've saved me slogging through hip dip snow, wind, etc. last winter!

It doesn't matter how many holes you have in the bucket. What matters is the placement of the hole. the water will only fill the pan up to the top of what ever hole or how ever many holes you have. so where the hole is will be your water level. Also if the lid on the top method is used you must make sure the lid is air tight or it will just leak out. it is better to put the hole on the lid end of the bucket then it will be air tight.

instead of a bucket I use a old plastic Folgers coffee container.

Just wanted to thanks for responses. I did actually make a waterer this weekend. I used the bucket; cut about a 2 to 3 inch hole and inverted a 5 gallon culligan bottle in it. Works great. Next is a 5 gallon feeder. Its so great to recycle and come up with stuff for FREE

Someone asked about a plastic pan for the waterer so they could use their ACV.
What about using a oil pan? I looked at some at the auto parts store and I think they were $1.78.

wow I am glad I stumbled upon this thread. I am about to change and grow my coop and run area and I was going to need three more waterers adn was not looking forward to $50 a pop for those chicken waterers..
Thanks

I tried to make one of these today. I have a 5 gallon bucket that we put about a 1/4 inch hole in approx. 1 inch from the bottom. The pan was bought at TSC. We filled the bucket up with water

and it promptly ran out on the ground - over the side of the pan until it was about 1/4 inch above the hole.

It seems to me that the amount of water would be the same without the bucket. I'm confused because this should work - shouldn't it?
