We have never had chickens, but we will as soon as we feel prepared!

Currently thinking about a couple different breeds, including Silver and Gold Brakel, Cream Legbar, and Plymouth Barred. Might also do Cayuga Ducks.

Our family of 6 are ready to take on this challenge, but could probably use more than just a little guidance.

G'Day from down under splitrocknknoll :frowWelcome! Very exciting!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. These may be of particular interest:
Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens
Topic of the Week - Keeping the Flock Safe from Predators
There are also some down the bottom of the page which are duck specific.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Hello and welcome!
I'm also starting a homesteading journey and chickens are my gateway animal! So far so good and I'm sure you will love having them around.
Do your goals include eggs and meat? We're raising a dual purpose flock to fulfill those needs.

Also, I hadn't heard of Brakels before and I love learning about new chickens, so I'm off to investigate! :)
