Homesteaders

Pics
I just read the last few posts so I am behind. You will SAVE money on your second year of homesteading. Remember that the seeds from the first harvest are to be saved for the next planting. Thus, you don't buy seeds again, plus some plants will last a few years without needing to be started from seeds.

Don't forget the investment of NUT trees and fruit trees. YOU buy them ONCE! They will produce year after year for you as long as you have cross pollination done properly. The one time investment is worth it in my opinion.

PLUS, if you have 25-50 chickens you can breed them and cull the 2 year olds or 3 year olds. They will produce eggs and meat for the deep freezer all year and all you have to do is bring in a new rooster every 5 or 6 years to mate. The feed can be earned through egg selling and if you free range your costs can go down to very little or nothing at all. You can produce a garden specifically to provide bugs and veggies for the chcikens as long as you regulate the amount of hours on the garden.

Initial costs of homesteading will seem like a lot but if you do it properly you will not need to put another dime into it-and you will not have to buy groceries! That is worth it in the long run. If you have more than an acre-I believe you said 3 unless I am mistaking it for another thread-then you should be able to produce enough fruits, nuts, veggies, eggs to sell. GOOD LUCK and please keep us updated!

PS-the first thing you would want to do is buy the book! then start pricing fruit and nut trees because they will take longer to produce the way you want. After that you can gradually build up the rest of the homestead

Thanks! I will check out these sources.
I'm being followed by a moon shadow, moon shadow , moon shadow,
Leapin and hopping on a moon shadow, moon shadow , moon shadow,

Cat Stevens? Great song.

Oh, I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow

And if I ever lose my hands, lose my plough, lose my land,
Oh if I ever lose my hands, Oh if.... I won't have to work no more.
And if I ever lose my eyes, if my colours all run dry,
Yes if I ever lose my eyes, Oh if.... I won't have to cry no more.

Oh I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin' and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow

And if I ever lose my legs, I won't moan, and I won't beg,
Yes if I ever lose my legs, Oh if.... I won't have to walk no more.
And if I ever lose my mouth, all my teeth, north and south,
Yes if I ever lose my mouth, Oh if.... I won't have to talk...

Oh I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin' and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow

Did it take long to find me? I asked the faithful light.
Did it take long to find me? And are you gonna stay the night?

I like it, reminds me of my trips to Alaska with my Dad. I learned a lot of really good songs. My son even likes the "old" songs when they turn on. Like "Little Sparrow" by Dolly, sang him to sleep with that song for over a year. "the rose" is another good one. My only problem is I forget who sings them, so I end up asking my Dad and he has to call me back with the answer lol

You are showing your age...

I suppose you could look at it as "aging" but I prefer "surviving". Still it was a fun song and makes me smile.

So I have an odd question. Do you think an open, fresh air coop would be ok for 3 girls, or should I get a more traditional enclosed coop for my starter coop? Hubby is limiting my starter numbers to three, and if I can't get the large property I would like, we would have a backyard flock, and ordinances state maximum of 6 hens and no roos, so I was hoping to get your opinion. My friend said when I get my house he will donate however many girls I want, he breeds out his own and retires the older gals, they still lay but his family wont let them go to freezer camp so he just gives them away. Any opinions would be good, I have searched for open air for small number and I get nothing but how to build, and sent back to how great they are for the chickens. I really don't want anymore then 12, so I want to keep it pretty small, and I figured retirement coop was good for a starter. His are in an old shed with a pop door and a large run, and I was kind of hoping to do a rotating run idea so they can get fresh grass and into my garden. My winters are very mild in the valley and we are lucky to get 3 weeks of snow and slush.

Not sure an open air coop would be good with just three birds. Large fowl or bantam, I'd get something a little more closed up. Proper ventilation of course. You may find varying opinions though.

If you plan to move I also wouldn't get anything to substantial cuz they can be hard to move.
