I do garden and planted two apple and a pear tree. I have a few ducks, chicks and rabbits. My garage is now a makeshift barn/workshop. Wish I could afford to move out somewhere with acreage maybe someday. Anybody got any lotto number tips.

I was actually surprised my daughter is asking for a bow. I got the animals so they could learn some self sufficient skills. They didn't have the opportunity to grow up in the country. I asked her what ya gonna do with it, I can't see you killing bambi. She says she wants to go hunting. So maybe a Christmas present. Any suggestions for a newbie girls bow( They are 24,24,17)?

If I did my dear Mara I wouldn't give them up rofl. We have 3 1/2 acres but it's no where near enough! Lol My husband and I talk about how we would spend the BIG lottery winnings all the time (we don't even play ha) but here goes.... We would but around 300 acres of lakefront property (his idea on ky lake I say build our own lake) build a house that has solar panels wood heating a root cellar a cistern and dig a well. Dig a pond ( regardless if we are by the lake or not) stock it with fish. He watches doomsday preppers so he wants an underground bunker sigh. Have chickens goats pigs horses cattle rabbits and pretty much every kind of livestock (except peacocks I HATE those things! Long story...) we would have the Amish come in to build most of our stuff so it could be run without electricity. We would plant a huge orchard and have a green house and garden. Plus I'm sure ten thousand other things! Lol

Any one else? How would you spend your lottery money? Buy land? Fight for chicken rights in city limits?

We also would do some charity work but instead of just saying here some money we would buy a vacant lot in town and start a community garden idea. Are you hungry? Take a shift weeding or spreading compost for four hours here's your fruits and veggies kind of deal. Maybe start an after school program that teaches kids about growing their own food and taking care of animals?

I really want to learn to bow hunt! Interested to see if anyone has any suggestions. We have some awesome deer hunting here and I love venison.. I've just never hunted myself.

I was afraid my few thousand sq feet wouldn't technically be considered a homestead.

Lol you might be my sista from another mister ( is that even how that is said!!???)

I'm sure I don't speak for everyone but I for one applaud you doing what you can with what you have! If every single person would be as interested in making even their postage stamp sized yards produce for them less people in this world would be hungry period. So if you have space for just one tree in your yard instead of planting a Bradford pear plant a pear (they don't need a to another to pollinate). I went to visit my cousin in NY and a few people were growing veggies on their fire escapes! I respect that. You don't have to have 10,000 acres in Montana or somewhere. There just isn't that much land to go around. Sad but true. You keep doing what you can and keep right on dreaming of what you want to do one day. You might not ever do it all in fact if I live to be 105 I hope I still never sit back and say I'm done that's all I want to do. I hope there is always something else that excites me, gets my creative juices flowing and when I take a moment to rest a look up being proud of what I've done so far. Homesteading and farming are in my mind two very different thing my dear friend. For me homesteading is about YOU and YOUR home. Everyone is different

Oh and before I get slammed by anyone that is a member of the Bradford pear association let me say I do not have anything personally against the above named tree species. But if I'm working my butt off in the yard every tree, bush, animal, child and husband better be doing the same! ;)
