Quote: I generally get 2-4 lbs. from each bucket depending on type Russet, Yukon Gold, Red, etc. You can plant them anytime you like. I grow them all year indoors and outside. I've harvested the current batch as I won't be able to water them while out of town. I'll plant another 7-8 buckets when I get back from traveling for the holidays. I try to plant 2 buckets 3 weeks apart to ensure a steady supply.

Very cool! I probably will try this in the spring. I have plenty of pails and some buckets from my apple trees.
Do you have drainage holes in the buckets?

Yes, I don't want to risk drowning them. I drill 8-10 3/16" holes approximately 1" up the side from the bottom around the buckets so some water remains in the bucket and still have decent drainage. I put the buckets in aluminum tray lids I get from Sam's for the indoor growing. I rotate between crops with beans, cabbage, squash, pretty much anything but another root crop.

Wouldn't it take a lot of buckets to get a years worth of taters? DW figures we'd need 120 lbs. Carrots 240 lbs. Onions 60 lbs.
If you needed 10 lbs. a month, then figure using 28-32 buckets. I stated it saved digging... not real-estate.

I went to YouTube to see what I could find about potato buckets and found this gem lol

I thought it was cute!

If I lived in small spaces without space for a garden, I'd do it, though the other vids I've seen on it the people all harvest the taters too early....they should let those vines die back completely before harvesting the taties. They'd get bigger tubers if they waited.

I totally agree! I watched a few where the people said things like 'I see a couple leaves have died back so i am going to dump the bucket' and then they are disappointed by the small taters.

I definitely am going to try and grows some bucket potatoes and maybe some carrots too next year but probably will put a few rows in the ground as well. Has anyone ever tried sweet potatoes? I may do a bucket or two of those. I am zone 4b so the ground isnt warm enough for long enough, but maybe in a bucket! we dont eat much sweet potatoes but it would be a fun experiment!
