Hugg, sorry to hear that about your hernia. DD lives in Conroe and we've talked about moving down. We'd planned a trip to Waco last year but the storms nixed that. Anyhow it's cold here for sure.

What kinds of tomatoes does everyone like to grow? Here is what I am planning (pretty normal selections for me) for this year:

Pineapple beefsteak
Heirloom brandywine beefsteak
San Marzano paste
Roma paste
Sweet 100s
May try a 'chocolate cherry' variety from the guy I am ordering seeds from

If I get ambitious I may do an yellow variety but probably would get that start from the greenhouse

I used to get all my seeds from this guy in Texas who has great results and great customer service except he nearly doubled prices this year (3.99 for 20 tomato seeds??)

This year I am going to try buying from a guy in Ohio that sells heirloom varieties. I prefer supporting the little guys over seed companies like burpee when I can.

I think I will be ordering strawberry roots and asparagus crowns from gurneys later this spring

I ordered Beefsteak and Roma from a new greenhouse here, Seedlings are just easier and I like to try to support local business. Hoping it works out.

You might consider saving your own seeds. It's not too hard. Though hybrids might not be possible.

I intended to save seeds last year but ended up losing almost all of my tomatoes due to odd hot and cold swings right after i planted. I ended up having to replant with greenhouses plants and they were all hybrids.

This year I hope to save tomato seeds

San Marzano are my favorite paste tomato! They make the best pizza sauce

My plan is to start about a dozen of each kind and then pick the best of each for as many as I want.
I will then sell the rest of the plants at the farmers market where we sell eggs.

I always have extra plants but never sold them as it wasn't worth it to set up a booth for just that. It will be no extra effort now

I look at things as even if I got a dollar it's a dollar I didn't have otherwise.
