Homesteaders

No that is not my coop.

I agree the nipple waterers are great and I have two five gallon buckets with three nipples each in the Delaware run. Though I don';t think older birds get enough water with nipples.

I've not found a good sized waterer for the brooder though. Since I keep changing what I use to brood in I might be able to. My plastic bin brooder have no where to hang a nipple waterer.

I don't know about Cicadas since I'm in Alaska and while everything is blooming and nice not many birds or insects. Only one lone Magpie of late. I did see some Robins near the camp site a week ago and the Loons and Swan.

I've been lurking on this thread for a few weeks now. I just wanted to show you how I use a nipple type waterer in a plastic bin brooder. Not original maybe but it works. I use hardware cloth for a cover. And wire to hang the bucket from that cloth.

If you ignore the chick and the hand holding it and look at the background you will see what I mean. I use wire both to hang the bucket and to hold it up higher as the chicks grow. When the chicks get too tall for where I've got it now I will have to get a cardboard box or two to extend the sides. That way I will be able to have the bucket higher.

With such nice weather and as much as the chicks are feathering out I hope to be able to start transitioning them out to the run before I need to worry about that.

I'm a homestead wannabe. I do what I can on my small urban lot but am in the process of looking for a more conducive property. For years I subscribed to "Countryside" magazine. Then it seemed to change a bit, so I didn't renew. This thread may help fill the gap!

I used to love that mag also but then noted the change as well, so wrote them a letter about it and never went back. The older CS mags have some great articles written by folks who are actually trying to homestead from scratch on small acreage and large, women and men, all ages and walks of life....I loved reading the information they had to offer.

So much can be done on an urban lot if a person is willing to step outside the box and be different from the neighbors....often it's a nice conversation starter and one can really get to know the neighbors but sometimes there are some neighbors that don't like it when someone is living differently. I love it that you are growing where you are planted!

I've never read the mag but I love this site for info on everything I do. Animals, plants you name it. I have made some very dear friends here as well. Any and all questions can be answered someplace on the website. Heck these folks will answer questions you didn't even think to ask.

Don't call yourself a wannabe. Do what you can, where you are. That's my philosophy.

Yep, that's what I'm doing. Just need more land to stretch out and the privacy that would bring. If it's meant to be, I'll find the right place. If not, I'm grateful for what I do have! And I'm 5-10 minutes from my daughter and grandson, which is a plus (most of the time)!

To everyone:

How does one determine is something is "meant' to be"?

What are your goals? There are books about urban homesteading. Farming on large acres etc. etc.

I guess my point is to encourage you to go for it, whatever it is you want. Make a plan and figure how you intend to get there.

All my life I took things as they came. I was wrong. I should have decided what it was I wanted and made a plan on how to get there. By the time I decided I was to old.

Start with a list of the things you like to do. I've always liked gardening and animals.

Now I encourage my kids to take risks. I will be there for them. I didn't have that.

I also didn't have the internet and you. Successful people have one thing in common. They are risk takers and they've failed a few time before they became successes.

An old Jewish proverb is "Man plans, God laughts". My experience has been somewhat different. Man plans/God smiles. At least sometimes He smiles. Not always but sometimes.

Have a nice day.
