My wife and I bought a home and 18 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains a year ago. We’ve lived in the mountains at a different location for 18 years. While we could’ve had chickens at our last place there really just wasn’t enough room and we had many neighbors close to us. Where we are now is at the end of a private road and the nearest neighbor is 300 yards away and is separated by forest. Over the last year we began transforming this very run down property into a homestead. We cleared another 3-4 acres at the top and built a large pond. When we moved here I owned a weed whacked and an old 16’ Homelite chainsaw. Now we are up to 7 ranch and pro chainsaws. Plus we replaced the weed whacked with an old John Deere 855. I grew up in the Ozarks and my wife in Thailand. We have both lived rural most of our lives. But we’d never taken on a project of the size. 2 weeks ago we received our orders of: 13 chickens (heritage breeds), 5 ducks (Golden Hybrid 300’s) and an Embden guard goose. The goose is just like a puppy I highly recommend. Plus we ordered 3 guinea keets which will arrive this week. Our coop consists of two actual coops: one 8x10x7 and one 8x8x7. There are two runs, one 10foot and the other 30 foot all connected. The coops are plumbed and wired.

My wife is a housewife and I’m a VP of a tech company. We have a son who’s still on school. We began homeschooling him this summer.

we welcome your comments and advice.
