Homesteading

Runs year round At about 6-7 mph and the ponds were stocked but a torrential rain killed 12 catfish, 8 bass, 25 perch, and about 300 fathead minnows.

Oh! I get it!

Yep....my family is from Texas.

My favorite joke about West Texas is "We had our 5 inch average rainfall last year, I remember the night it came".

My baby sister still lives on the home place in Texas, and she has a very high raccoon population. She hasn't mentioned possums lately, and I don't remember many of them growing up.

Here in Alaska I have no raccoons and no possoms.

I have a terrible time with raptors, and with neighbor dogs.

Now that it is clear that I will kill any stray dog that gets near my chickens, I haven't seen any, but I am still pretty paranoid about it.

The raptors drive me crazy. Just this week a Merlin got into my coops. Luckily the chickens all huddled, so it didn't kill any. My mom asked why the kids didn't capture it and train it to hunt. Kinda tempting, but I think you need some sort of permit, and anyway, I don't think you can tame down the adults.

It was cool, and way nice that the Merlin was much too small to kill my chickens (the bantams were in the bottom of the chicken huddle, I am sure it could have killed them).

Now I wonder if the three eaten eggs I had found were from the Merlin and not from my chickens.
