Honey Bee Sanctuary - NOT!

Everytime I see a drone I think "Poor Bastard" lmaooooooooo

After mating, a drone dies quickly, as his abdomen rips open when his endophallus is removed. If I knew that my abdomen would rip open and my phallus would be removed well lets just say I would own stock in KYjelly and I would never go near a female EVER!
It's pretty funny, there is a type of cricket that entertains his lady friend while they do the deed by letting her snack on his wings... now, he has 2 sets of wings, so he COULD breed 2 times in his life and some actually do, but apparently most are smarter than that and decide that once was enough thank you very much... And some bored scientists studied this behavior....

I could hear it now....
Me: "OOOO BABY!"
The Wife: "I am hungry, I will snack on your arm while you do yo thang."
Me: Pulls all her teeth the night before while she sleeps and says OK! :bun

It wasn’t long after I got chickens that we, my DH and I, decided we would get some bees. I purchased several books and magazines about beekeeping and was all gung-ho. But then reality slapped me one day when I realized that we actually meant just me. Since I do not work anymore ;) the apiary would be 99.99% my responsibility and I’m just not completely sure I would be able to handle the job. Unfortunately, my birthdays have given me many aches and pains, one of them being my new friend, Arthur-itis! He seems to want to give me a hand with everything. :lau

With all that said I’m just not sure I could do what was needed, especially lifting the boxes. Heck, I can barely maneuver a 50 lb bag of chicken feed.

However, I still might just try your wonderful suggestion and visit a beekeeping club. Who knows! My beekeeping curiosity is sparked once again. Thank you for your awesome suggestion.

I will finish reading the rest of the post later. (I hope this isn't already mentioned.) I got half way through before seeing this one. I wish I had your problem, Bee stings can be GREAT for your friend Arthur, they shouldn't "minus the chickens eating the bee's" be a problem co insiding with each other. And they say that a bee hive takes less work than your dog but more than a cat. Most of the year their isn't any work but filling up water and in the winter if it's cold they don't leave the hive. No breaking up ice in that pond.

Also If you don't want to work with the honey processing or feeding the bee's just leave most of the honey for them.

I'll admit I don't currently have bee's but have been researching for the past 3 years and plan on buying some next year if I can't catch a swarm.

Well, what do you say?!? So bees, and careless handling:lau, could bring me some Arthur relief. :yesss: Oh the things you learn here on BYC. I’m just kidding about the careless handling, but I might not be about a newbie’s nervousness! ;)

Ain’t that the truth. My barn cats here require hardly anything...other than stepping over them when they’re sprawled out in my path.

plan on buying some next year if I can't catch a swarm.
That statement just looks funny and it is said so nonchalantly. “Oh honey, I’m going out to catch a swarm of bees today!” I had never heard such until a few years ago and I’m no spring chicken, just sheltered from the bee world, I suppose. If I were to try that I’d probably come up on a swarm of Africanized honey bees, and end my beekeeping before it even got started. Hey, but I bet I’d have NO MORE ARTHRITIS! :lau:hit:thumbsup

Thank you for your wonderful information and NOPE, it was all NEW info! And good luck “catching your bees!”

I've seen 2 people trying to catch swarms, one was on my college campus and needed to be moved due to risk of students being stung, they brought a bee vacuum and sucked them up and took them away. The other was at work in a tree and they hung what appears to be part of a hive from the tree, I don't think they were successful in capturing those and they went somewhere else.

If you set up a trap in your yard early next spring, you may be able to catch some of the same bee's your watering know. (Well their little sisters, but out of the same hive). They shouldn't be any meaner than what your watching today.
Just FYI They can have (from the different fathers) a nice hive for a while then a "hot" hive later then back to a nice one.

As it stands right now, I plan on beginning beekeeping next spring. I do plan on purchasing some but I just might try to catch some too. That’s a great idea.

I hope it works out for you. And for me as well. Didn't catch a swarm this year with several traps in different locations. When It was time to buy I got laid off. I have 2 hives set up in my yard hoping to start them in their permanet home. So that money is already spent.
I found a new place to put another trap when I got another job that should be great next year.

Also some people who run the Langstroth hives for weight purposes Including myself use 8 frame mediums. A little shorter than the deeps and obviously narrower than a 10 frame.
I don't have any problem with picking up heavy items. I are construction worker.lol It's for already having the small equipment when I don't have a strong back any more from picking up to much and for the wife to be able to help today.

That got long winded.
