My cocker spaniel is 12 years old and recently had a seizure. She is on the mend now but occasionally is urinating indoors due to her medication. Any ideas on how to eliminate the smell from the rug as traditional cleaners dont seem to work.

Poor baby!
I use white vinegar to get the smells out......and it won’t hurt your carpets. Pour directly on site and scrub with brush and rinse with water.

When my Westie started with seizures, I did the same carpet treatment @Chick-N-Fun is recommending. Vinegar works well!

Worth trying these if you haven't. They worked great when my first dog got very old and couldn't hold it in for more than 2 hours at a time. Some dogs won't tolerate them (they'll rip them off or eat them) but some do very well.

You can go to a pet or janitorial supply and find cleaners that will eliminate fecal and urine odors. They contain enzymes that break the waste down.

I've had good luck with Simple Solution Stain n Odor remover on cat urine - but not the one labeled "Carpet Cleaner" - even on old stains. Trick is to let it sit for 5-10 minutes like it says in the instructions. The enzymes break down the stain. The only stain this stuff couldn't remove was turmeric.
