my neighbor finally got her own chicks after watching me enjoy mine.They were purchased at Southern States and the fellow there assured her they were females.
She purchased 6 Hubbard Golden Comets,I suggested that she get these due to the sex link similarities to the Red Star.
I saw them this weekend and all 6 are yellow/white which would indicate males instead of females according to information presented to me and other chicken raisers,females being red/dark.
This may not be true and I hope it's not since Roosters will not be a welcome item at her house.
Perhaps these could end up being all females since I wouldn't think suppliers would be bringing Southern States cockerels to sell.
Maybe we'll know more in 3/4 weeks I suppose by checking combs.Any advice or knowledge on this would be great.
Regardless the chicks will be raised proper but after they get older and if they end up males we'll have to find them a good home.

I am not familiar with this breed so I can't say. There will be others stop by to welcome you to BYC that might have more knowledge about this breed than I do. But sometimes chicks do get sexed wrong or people are not honest when selling birds! All you can do is wait it out. If they start to develop big ol red combs in a few weeks, grow tree trunks for legs and start practicing the crow, well then there could be trouble in your town!

thank you,we'll see what happens.This guy at SS used a method of turning the chick over and if the legs/feet stayed closed to body they were hens,if they started moving their legs as if trying to run,males.I'm not familiar with this method but thought the colors were the tell all.

Hello and Welcome To BYC! Hope your friend didn't get taken, but she might consider having some back up chicks lined up. Sometimes the females are a pretty light buff/reddish color in some sex links depending on the cross, but they should definitely be a different color from the males... my question would be that they actually got in straight run sex links, the first people there picked out the females by color, and by the time your friend was there all that was left were the males (I have seen that happen at our TSC) and the employee didn't know what he was doing, especially considering his sexing method.

Turning over chicks to see what the legs do to sex them is just crazy! LOL There are all kinds of strange methods to sex chicks, most of which are not at all accurate. Color, feather or vent sexing is the most accurate of methods, depending on the breed.

all of these are the same yellowish white.You can't believe everything on the internet but I think there should be some red or darker hue. I don't think these will lay any eggs.I'll probably take these from her and raise them until I can find a home for them get her some new chicks
to raise.

I didn't laugh too hard so as not to hurt her feelings but lesson learned.I'm heading by SS this afternoon to talk to this guy and see if they'll give her some guaranteed females to replace these.
Who knows,these may end up being hens but things sure look dim.
I was not planning on raising chicks this year but it would be tough to do anything but raise them then try and find a home.

Honestly, it sounds as if she may have been hoodwinked. All those old wives tales are senseless.

A Golden Comet is just fancy name for a sex link. The whole purpose of a sex link is that the color is a "link" if you will, to the sex. The white/yellow ones are indeed cockerels. The females should be a golden/buff color. It's simply causes by putting a Red/Gold male over a silver/white female. Ta Da. Nothing magical. The chicks can be sexed at hatch and are sexed at hatch. Yes, some feed stores do indeed get male sex links in their shipments from the hatchery.

Once again, people who are merely employees at feed stores don't often know very much. They're just retail employees in most cases. Caveat emptor.
