I'm new here but have been reading the forum faithfully for the past week. We are the new owners of week old chicks. We got them last week one day after they hatched. We got them from a farm in the area. We have no idea what we have because quite honestly, when we got them, we only cared that they were cute (our almost 5 year old has been begging for us to move to a farm so we thought egg laying chickens would be a decent intro to backyard farming). The farmer rattled off some names of the types of chicks he had but we didn't pay the least bit attention thinking a chickens a chicken. Of the 6 baby chicks we purchased that day, one is a beautiful brown bird, 2 are yellow and brown, 2 are mostly black but some yellow is starting to come through and one little itty bitty chick that is gray with feathered feet that the farmer said had hatched out of a blue egg (though he made that sound like an anomaly rather than the norm. My daughter has taken a real liking to the brown chick and that's the one she wants to hold every day - that one is without a doubt, her bird. My husband on the other hand, despite being a major animal lover and always having wanted to live on the farm, he just sees them as future egg layers...meanwhile, I am the one who doesn't usually care much for animals and thought I'd keel over and die before living on a farm...I am the one head over heels in love with these birds. I cannot believe how in one short week we've seen so much growth in these tiny creatures. All 5 tower over that itty bitty gray bird with the feathered feet but she/he sure holds her own. I spend every moment of my free time researching and reading about chickens. I regret not paying closer attention when the farmer rattled off the types of birds. I may have to call him to see if he remembers what we got because it's driving me insane that I don't have any idea what our sweet little chicks are and therefore, I cannot read up on the particular types we have. In the meantime, I have a wish list of other beautiful birds I want next...barnevelder, black copper marans, buff brahma...and so many more...we may need to buy a farm if I ever hope to have one (or more) of all the beautiful birds I see on this forum!

Anyway, I am completely and entirely hooked and cannot wait to see what our sweet chicks will look like in a few months. I can't wait to see what they lay for eggs and a I can't wait to add more birds to our collection someday, which is probably going to be later than sooner. In the meantime, I'll read all that I can to learn as much as possible to make sure we give these girls (boy??) the best life here with us.

If you post pics of your chicks people here will be able to tell you what breeds they are.

So glad you could join our community! Chickens are highly addicting and you just can't have a few of them!! Enjoy your new chicks and welcome to our flock!

Thanks everyone! I'll post some pics in the breed/gender section in a couple of weeks when it might be easier to identify what we have. I went out with a couple of other moms from our kids preschool this morning after we all dropped our kids off and was pleasantly surprised to hear both of them say they too we're preparing to get some chicks soon! We live in a moderately rural area so it wasn't a huge surprise but still nice to know there will be friends nearby venturing into the same thing!
