I bought some pullets from a home and garden store who gets their chicks from Hoover’s hatchery. They only sell pullets, however I have a 2 week old austrolorp chick who has a darker comb than the other austrolorps. Like a lot darker. As I mentioned before, I only ordered hens. Is there anyway that Hoover’s had a mix up and I got a rooster? Just curious because I’ve heard of them mixing up before.

It’s definitely possible, Hoovers or the store you got them from could have mixed them up. Happens all the time, especially with chicks from tsc. Could you post a picture? We could check if it really is a cockerel.

I know they aren’t the best, but I woke her (him?) up from a nap 🙃 I’m going to try to get some better ones later. I know it doesn’t look super dark, but the rest are still a bright yellow. Could she just be older than the rest?

Also, I got them from a small business, if that affects anything.

Very common. Hatcheries vent sex their chicks. Vent sexing is only about 90% accurate and could be even less if the person who is doing the sexing is inexperienced.
