Hoover Hatchery

Thank you everyone. We ended up ordering some more because my son lost almost all of his to a predator and has a small coop that can't handle the 15 chick minimum order. I didn't learn though and ordered 4 hatchery choice rare breed chicks and 2 hatchery choice dual purpose chicks along with a Delaware and a Buff Orpington and they sent 2 extra chicks. I could figure the Brahma out and I am pretty sure there is a Golden Laced Wyandot. I may have to post. The Buff Orpington is very tiny compared to rest of them. Must be a runt.

My current flock is entirely from Hoover Hatchery. No problems with any of the birds. However, is there a problem at Hoover currently? I saw a bunch of scuttle on FB that a large portion of their early ship birds were arriving with VERY high DOA. Now their website says they have no more availability for 2025, but to check local feed stores for their products. To me, a relative newbie in chickens and ordering, this seems odd. Is it common to see this?

Cold snaps and resulting delay in delivery may be the cause.
That would be my guess. USPS has been having slower deliveries here I discovered around the holidays. I'm waiting on a delayed package right now.
We've had some cold weather here too which wouldn't help. Idk why they're even shipping chicks in the middle of winter. I guess if the demand is there they're thinking profits.
Another thing is... well.... Facebook. I don't doubt there's some added drama there. There seems to be with everything about that place.

I had to unfollow the BYC page on Facebook. All I saw was "what's wrong with my chicken?" and it was freaking me out a little. LOL

Correct. People getting their birds now were getting over 50% DOA, up to 100%.
I just received my shipment from Hoover today. 15 Rudd Rangers. All DOA to the post office this morning. On top of that, they didn’t provide a contact number for USPS to call me for pick up. I’ve ordered from three other hatcheries more than once and I’ve received a call each time.

I showed up to the post office at 3:30pm to find out they delivered them to my house at 11am. The woman at the post office knew something was wrong with no peeps so she peeked and they were already dead. Not crushed. I presume weather, poor health, mishandling, or a combo. I live in Florida.
