Hoping better luck with 4-week-old Buff Orpington and Barred Rock - UPDATED @ 6 WEEKS WITH PICS

Speckledhen, thank you, I always look to your posts for experienced wisdom. You and redbarnfarms and RockMom are my favorite people this morning! I love bearers of good news, and hope you're right. I woke up just feeling bummed about 2/3 being roos.

This IS a hatchery chick from My Pet Chicken, so I don't know about purity and quality of lines, but it's supposed to be Barred Rock. I do believe she's darker overall than a roo would be from other pics I've found while searching the forums - to me she looks more speckled than barred except on her chest. And I just looked again this morning and really the comb looks yellow. To my obviously biased eyes. So I will continue to hope.

Clearly you need another chicken. Better make it two to ensure one more hen.

We haven't named ours yet - we wanted to make sure we didn't lose any to illness or bad luck or anything. Or to the evil Gender Gods. We have little nicknames, but in the next few weeks we have to figure out real names. I like having a theme. The white silkies are such little twin princess brats that they certainly need names reflecting that.

I really wish I could had bought a cockerel too. They didn't have any. I bought these three from an Amish family last month. They never handle their flocks much so they are afraid of people for the most part. Iv'e got them eating out of my hand so far but I still cannot catch them.

OK, so the buff still looks like a pullet but I want to get final confirmation on the Barred Rock. Here she is today, at just 1 day shy of 6 weeks.

Her comb is just starting to pink up at the base while the tips are still yellow. The baby wattles I didn't even see until I went to take this picture today - had a little heart attack but I hope we're still OK. She still looks dark overall (to me) but of course I look at these pics and think she's lighter again. Argh. Please tell me she's still a pullet or I'll only have 1 hen left! She still acts like a hen - usually her posture is very henlike, and she and the BO hang out together. Her legs are out of focus in the pic, but they're still very dark.

Can you catch the whiff of desperation here? I'm stil getting over my partridge rock being a boy.

They both look like pullets from the first pictures you've posted. The BR still looks like a pullet in your recent photo. My BR pullets always developed their combs faster than the other breeds at the same age. I have both barred rocks and buff orpingtons. If she were a cockerel, she'd have a much redder, larger comb by now.
