Hey all!
We are new to BYC officially, though have gained tons of insight be reading posts over the past few months.

We have 6 laying hens and breed rabbits on our growing homestead in southern Appalachia. Recently our favorite/best chicken was found dead by our neighbor (see my other post) and the flock dynamics are extra whacky. The rest of the cranky ol ladies aren't adjusting well to finding a new pecking order. They never really got along anyhow :idunno They're all pretty strange birds.

Hoping officially joining this community will help us keep trying to establish good habits and a better relationship with the remaining flock, instead of just eating them all :p

Thanks for reading!

Sorry to hear about your hen! It can be hard not to throw in the towel when you are dealing with problems. In my first year I had more than my share of strange and unheard of issues in copious amounts. I almost gave up but the great community here got me through it. If you have a question, ask. There are so many wonderful folks here that would love to help.
:hugs and :welcome

Glad you joined us!
Flock dynamics are a changing thing. Major stressors will cause the changes to be a bit more crazy than the usual. But they'll settle down, untill someone gets a feather ruffled or decides to swap spots on the roost with one who likes the spot already.
It's like having toddlers all the time.lol
Make sure they have ample space in the coop if you have one, and plenty of roosts.
I'm rambling... Sorry.
At any rate, welcome and enjoy! :love

Don't give up. I lost my first bunch to some unknown predator and said I was never attempting chickens again! But I couldn't live without having fluffy butts around and have since integrated 3 groups/generations :jumpy. The girls work it out eventually. Just remove the big bullies.:)

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

So sorry about your hen! :hugs If this wasn't a pecking order thing, she could have been sick in some way. Flocks try to run off sick birds to protect themselves. A sick bird would attract predators so its possible she was killed.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our community! :)
