Well, it is working sticking out the sides and at a downward angle btwn 45 & 60 degrees. (Horizontal =0*)
The 3 week old birds are living large in their aqua paradise, getting lots and lots of water. Took just a couple minutes of tapping at the nipple so they could see that water comes out was enough to pique their interest and they took it from there.
The larger birds, 6 weekers, cannot seem to figure it out. The nipples are performing as they should, the birds are failing. After way too long tapping and only getting them interested in the growing puddle, my daughter held the chickens up to the nipple, so close their beaks pushed on the nipple, with water running into their mouth ... they eagerly drink (perhaps to avoid drowning?). Yet not one of them will voluntarily peck at the nipple. Go figure?
Sigh! Mystery solved, yes, nipples placed at an angle on the side of the bucket do work and don't leak, but the older birds are slow learners (if they will ever learn at all).
