Aloha Chicken People,

I’ve been following this site for many years, and have never come across a question that wasn’t answered in these forums—until now. I haven’t found an answer to this anywhere, actually.

My question is: How normal is it for a rooster to hump his human?

My rooster started humping my feet at around maybe 3 months old(ish) and continues to do so every day, at least once a day, even though he now lives & sleeps in the wild with the rest of the chickens and has done so for over 3 months now.

To be clear: I don’t raise chickens. I live on an island that’s overrun with wild chickens, and I often wind up having to rescue and/or foster one. I’ve only raised one other chicken from a young age, so I don’t have very much experience with a fully tame chicken & what sort of behaviour could be considered “normal.”

Anyway, I am going to have to leave him soon and starting to worry if he can continue to thrive on his own without me here. I haven’t figured out how to share videos on this site, but, if interested, I have several days of “morning hump” videos with my over-sexed boy. I don’t have a “problem” with his behaviour so much as just being concerned. It’s already killing me to leave him & all the other animals, and I guess I’d just like to know that this sort of behaviour has been documented and it’s “normal” and should be no indication of him responding negatively to your sudden absence. I guess that’s what I’d most likely like to hear...

Thanks/mahaloz!
Aloha,
Kaua’i Chick!

Pretty normal, especially if you do nothing to discourage it. One of my young olive egger cockerals, the most dominant one, was standing on one of my thighs a while back when I was sitting on the chickens' park bench up by runs and suddenly became enamoured with my knee. I just picked him up and put him back down on the ground before he got too into it and he hasn't tried it again since. One older bachelor rooster I had was so oversexed that seeing any sort of mating activity in the other pens would stimulate him into squatting down and going through the motions and essentially mating with the ground. He no doubt would have LOVED humping my feet or...or ANYthing, really...but there was never anything there for him but the cold, cold litter. Silly sex-crazed big dope... Yet another reason I don't want roosters growing up thinking of me as just another chicken, albeit one that's oversized and kinda wonky looking.

Thanks so much for the responses!
It’s so good to know that this isn’t too unusual, and that was my main concern. As much as I hate to leave my chicken clan, I do have to move...
Gads it’s so heartbreaking. I love these chickens so much.
