Aloha Chicken People,
I’ve been following this site for many years, and have never come across a question that wasn’t answered in these forums—until now. I haven’t found an answer to this anywhere, actually.
My question is: How normal is it for a rooster to hump his human?
My rooster started humping my feet at around maybe 3 months old(ish) and continues to do so every day, at least once a day, even though he now lives & sleeps in the wild with the rest of the chickens and has done so for over 3 months now.
To be clear: I don’t raise chickens. I live on an island that’s overrun with wild chickens, and I often wind up having to rescue and/or foster one. I’ve only raised one other chicken from a young age, so I don’t have very much experience with a fully tame chicken & what sort of behaviour could be considered “normal.”
Anyway, I am going to have to leave him soon and starting to worry if he can continue to thrive on his own without me here. I haven’t figured out how to share videos on this site, but, if interested, I have several days of “morning hump” videos with my over-sexed boy. I don’t have a “problem” with his behaviour so much as just being concerned. It’s already killing me to leave him & all the other animals, and I guess I’d just like to know that this sort of behaviour has been documented and it’s “normal” and should be no indication of him responding negatively to your sudden absence. I guess that’s what I’d most likely like to hear...
Thanks/mahaloz!
