I went to a flea market today because I was looking for a good deal on some trees. There were people selling chickens and I was absolutely horrified at the condition. They were all crammed in little cages together. Most were panting from the heat and some were all loosing their feathers and very sickly looking. I had to walk away so that I wouldn't have ended up making a scene.

I would have made a scene if I thought that it would have made a difference. It's obvious that the people there selling these chickens could care less if their chickens were suffering or not. Horrible - just absolutely horrible : (

LaurieA Feel free to report this to your Department of Agriculture. This is not good and most states have rules and regulations regarding condition of birds, etc. I would like to put on my "Pollyana" hat and think these people didn't know better, but I will never buy birds from such a place. Maybe you can make a difference by reporting issues at this place!!! Thank you for caring about birds so much!

God gave us responsibility for the creatures we keep, they keep us in return, I think it's a sin to mistreat them. It's not that hard to see to their simple needs and it's madding to see someone abuse their livestock.

I am very involved in animal rescue and plan to make as much noise as I can about this flea market group. The skin on the chickens in the areas where there were no feathers and red blotchy marks, similar to a scab but not quite...anyone have any idea what would cause that? I am new to the chicken scene.
