How fun! I've always enjoyed doing dressage patterns, a mare I used to ride loved it too but I never was able to work on it more with her because she died of colic last year. I saw in your other post you did well--congrats!


Oh yikes, that sounds so scary. I don't live anywhere near the fires, but I'm sorry to hear you and others have to go through this stuff. I'm so glad for the help ya'll received and that all the horses were okay.

Yw, and thank you. She wasn't mine but she was a lesson horse I was beginning to ride frequently. It took me a little while to click with her and really start loving riding her, and right around when that happened we lost her, sadly. She was a really good horse that was so sweet. Her name was Missy.

Hey everyone!

So did anyone dress their horses up this year for Halloween? If so, I'd love to see outfits!

My barn had a Halloween party today, and I had a lot of fun. I didn't dress any of the horses up, and sadly I didn't really get any pictures, but some of the other girls had some adorable and great ideas. The girl that leases the mare (Amarillo) I ride often dressed Amo up as an angel, and she was just so cute. She attached a halo to her bridle and it was just bobbing around when she rode lol. There were other cute outfits like a pumpkin, a day of the dead theme, and one girl did 'the cow jumped over the moon' and put a sheet on her horse and velcroed a cardboard moon with star stickers on it and dressed as a cow. Another favorite of mine was one of the horses is called Cinco, and the girl who owns him dressed him up in a 'Cinco de Mayo' (is that how you spell it? oops) theme and put a sombrero and mustache on him, ha.

There were also some games I participated in, too. A pumpkin race where we had to trot thru some pumpkins/cones, and then a corn race...I'm just glad I didn't fall off on that one. Sky, the horse I used, is very spooky and also going blind so I had to be very careful, since the race (in case anyone hasn't heard of it) had to do with moving pieces of corn from barrel to barrel in a line and then run back to the finish. Luckily he was very, very good for me and I was sure to be careful and he didn't spook.
However, on our run back, I think he freaked out a little because I barely had to kick him and ask for him to canter before he just took off. Then he gave a little buck at the end, probably to show how upset he was that I put him thru that torture.

Surprisingly, that run got us second place, not that time matters really lol.

Yup, that is probably safer lol! My barn has been keeping to restrictions due to covid, though, like kind of 'grab and go' snacks at the party rather than people bringing actual food. And I do feel safer when it's outside and I don't get too close to people.

Bumping this thread, because I'm pretty bummed about a new change with my boarding situation.

My barn just got "gentrified," in other words, new management took over, raised the prices by A LOT with very little notice, and the whole atmosphere is changing. It was a nice quiet place with a lot of senior horses and older riders who trail ride, do low-level schooling competitions, or just tool around and enjoy their horses, which was a good fit for old-lady me and my senior horses. But this new management is turning it into a high-end competition barn, with back-to-back lessons all day, making it hard to get riding time in the arena, plus a lot more mandatory "hand-holding" than I need or want. For example, if management thinks my horse is not groomed well enough, they can groom my horse and charge me $$$ , plus a lot more nickel-and-diming for every little thing ($5 to take off a blanket - seriously?!)

I keep my 26-y-old retired Eventer gelding and my 22-y-old OTTB mare groomed and cared-for appropriately for senior horses in light work. I brush, pick their feet, keep their manes and tails tidy, they get great care from an excellent vet every year, a top-skilled farrier every 8 weeks, and I do their Fall vaccinations myself. The grain and supplements they get is determined by me, based on consultation with their vet. I let them get fuzzy in winter, I'm not going to clip them or keep them in show condition when they're not showing.

I've been in the horse world a LONG time, I was even a Pony-Club horse management judge back in the day, so I don't need to be dictated to about the care my horses need. I realize equine medical science advances and I try to keep up, I'm not stuck in the past.

I'd be happy to get some lessons with this new trainer, but I'm not going to be part of her competitive "training program" or keep my horses in constant show condition.

I'd love to stay here, but I suspect it's no longer a good fit for me or my horses, so I'm exploring other options, though it's frustrating because there are very few close by.

I don't have hard feelings towards the owners. I understand how business works, and that barn owners need to make a living. In fact in my younger days when I was competing a lot, I would have welcomed this change. I'm going to give it a chance, have a conversation with the new manager and see if she is willing to work with me, but I don't hold a lot of hope - I suspect two stalls taken up by one senior horse who I only ride enough to keep his mind engaged and a slightly younger horse who only does occasional, low-level competition, would be the type of clients who she will be happy to replace with younger, more competitive students.

I'm so sorry to hear--that seriously is bummer. And that is pretty crazy with some of the new things they've implemented. I really hope maybe you can work something out, or at least find a good new place to board. I wish you lots of luck!!
