Horse owner feedback please

The only thing I will add to all the wonderful advice is if you're going to keep a horse at home, make it 2.

My gelding, Simon, when I brought him to my place became very unruly in wanting to play with me. I tried a mini billy goat which I ended up selling because they hated each other. He went to a mini goat farm where they needed a mini billy goat. I then bought Jake, a nice sensible quarterhorse. Best thing I ever did for my TB. They are best of friends. And Jake is a wonderful horse to ride too.

research the insurance for boarders carefully with a company who does it regularly, here in VA there is a big difference in insurance for my pleasure horses, insurance for if others pay to ride your horses, insurance for others to board their horses, and insurance for others to ride their boarded horses on your property.

also, feed and hay prices can fluctuate wildly depending on factors you cannot control.

whoever said "oh what's one more" LOL I am living proof of that. I wanted one and now we have 6! but we also have 12 acres of pasture in 5 sections and I planned until june for hay so there are still about 400 bales in the loft.

be careful of those deadbeat borders, you might end up with a free horse that you can't claim as your own. folks are giving them away around here because feed has gotten so high!

they are a joy to have around. I have to smile whenever I look out my office window and there they are!

This is Star, my little breeding stock paint. She has one blue eye. She's 5 years old... I bought her as a 2 year old. She's a great little horse and I can't wait to throw a kid on her someday!

This is Bo, my rope horse. He's 1400lbs of sass. Great horse, but he keeps me on my toes! This is his normal, unamused look.

My $5 bale is around 40-50 lbs--16 flakes.--just for clarification

Our $10-12 a bale is 40-50 lbs and comes from Canada or out west somewhere. We pay for getting it here. My boys eat T&A or O&A. Coastal Hay is less expensive, but I have very poor pasture and my boys need the roughage.

The droughts, the fires the last year or 2 put hay at a premium. People were scrambling to get hay from whereever they could.

Course, different parts of the country have different options available to them. My cows in GA eat peanut hay, which is from the peanut plant after the pick the peanuts. Also they get grain from Anheiser-Busch.

There is a peanut hay available here, but it is not the same thing.

My feed bill has basically doubled in the last 4-5 years.

Carri - I agree with you - everybody's horses here are beautiful.
