Horse Talk

On the subject of the NYC carriage horses: http://www.veterinarypracticenews.com/Study-Finds-No-Evidence-of-Stress-in-NYC-Carriage-Horses/

They checked stress markers on several carriage horses on a normal work day and found pretty much no stress, then they checked the horses on their mandatory 5 weeks at pasture per year vacation and found higher stress markers than when they were working daily.

They probably love working so much lol plus being away from their normal handler

That, and horses are creatures of habit. They will always be happier working hard as long as the routine stays the same than they will be if they are allowed to be lazy but the routine isn't the same. It's not hard to stress a horse by changing up what they do or are expected to do in a day. Plus, I don't know if they are in group turnout or individual. I would imagine in the stables that they can see each other but not touch, in individual turnout, they may not be able to see another horse, and the horse they can't see is probably not the horse stabled beside them. If in group turn out, then anyone that has had horses in a pastured environment knows that the first few days are less than peaceful, plus, if you have a mean horse in the field, that will stress them ALL.

All very good points, I hadn't thought of that. Wonder if a vacation is still required?
