HORSES AND TACK

... he has a thick coat, especially for an Arabian...

As in, he doesn't shed out his summer coat? He stays furry/fluffy and doesn't get slick in the summer? If so, that is one of the main symptoms of Cushings disease, which is very common in Arabs. You might want to talk to your vet and do some research on it. If he DOES have Cushings, there are lots of ways to handle it, from micro-managing every aspect of his life, to being a bit more laid back. My 29-yr old Arab gelding has Cushings, and I manage it with Prascend tablets, Triple Crown feeds, and limited grazing. He first started showing symptoms in 2008, and is still going strong.

Picture below is from June 2012.

If the link below works, it is a picture of him in Jan 2011. While he *should* have a winter coat in Jan, the problem was that the hair he had on him had been there since LAST winter. What little he shed was replaced with more 4" long yak hair. We were still playing with his Pergolide dosage at that point.... (He was on compounded Pergolide until March 2012, when I switched him to Prascend, which is a MUCH better product!)

Thank you for telling me how to check his pulse! I'm gonna try that.:) and where he is currently (and has been for years) living, he is ENTIRELY field kept, they do not even have a run in shelter. This sounds cruel, but even if he had one he wouldn't use it. He spends most of his time wandering acres of unadulterated pine forest. He sheds during the summer A LOT, but only gets slick for a few months. His feet are in AMAZING shape (he gets a trim four times a year) and he has never been shod in his life (he is 18). His teeth are floated regularly, and he eats plenty. He has never had colic or founder, and his coggins test is negative. He used to be a barrel racer, but I don't race and his previous owner outgrew him (he is not mine yet, but we are getting the field ready, and plans are in place) and when I ride him he never wants to stop.

Just wanted to share this photo I took earlier today of my 1,5yearold boy and my 14yrold trothorse having a moment. I've had her since she was 5 - nine years this summer. We've had our ups and downs but made it through all of them so far.
