This is my 7 yr old Appy. He's 15'2 and he tapes at about 1033 lbs. Do you think he could use alittle more weight? It is so hard to tell when they live in the back yard :-) - I am questioning his back and wither area. I took the pic this morning. He gets 1 scoop 2 x's a day of Manna Pro Senior and he is out 24/7 with a roll of free choice hay.

I appreciate any comments!

Thanks!!

He looks like he would be in good performance shape. Is he ridden?

I like my horses a little fatter than they should be, but when they are performing, they need to be a little lean.

He looks pretty good to me, but could maybe put on a few pounds. From the appy's that I know, if he is thin anywhere it is in his rump. but that could be an exercise issue.

He is a pretty boy!

He looks great! People these days are us to seeing overweight horses. He doesn't need any more weight unless his ribs start sticking out...you should be able to see them a little.

I think he looks just right, but I'm not well-versed on appy confirmation.

You could excercise him and feed him for a few weeks.

Has he ever had the crease in the butt ?

We get our horses fit and look for the crease.
Now, they are not always this way, but this is how we like them.

He looks fine to me

I'm not sure exactly what you're concerned about over his withers and back (hard to tell from just a side view on a horse with roany markings), but IMO it is almost certainly a muscling issue, not a weight issue.

If you feel that there is insufficient muscling along the sides of the withers (between withers and the top of the shoulderblade) or down his back, the usual causes are either that he's just not in real muscly shape overall, like from not lotsa exercise overall; or that he's moving in a way that does not engage the topline muscles properly (either from soreness somewhere, from poor saddle fit no matter what the rider may think, or from the frame the rider is asking/allowing the horse to carry himself in)

I can't tell from the pic whether or not there is *something* not right with his topline (this is not a hint, I just honestly cannot tell whether there might be something minor) but I can tell you it suuuuure does not look like there is anything *major* wrong with his topline. (Tho unless the ground is fooling me, I'd like to see more heel, less underrun, on his forefeet)

Good luck, have fun, hope this helps some,

Pat

from this pic he looks about perfect...but I wonder why you have a 7 year old on senior feed?..why spend the extra money they charge for it..he would do just fine on a well balanced all around feed..
