seeing messages like this make me glad to be in Canada and very thankful for Tommy Douglas (he was one of the founders of the canadian health care system and also Keiffer Sutherlands Grandfather!..lol little trivia tid bit)

My mom had an uneventful stent surgery in August, was in the hospital 4 days, 1 day in ICU. Cost ----$111,000

She then had another stent, and artery replacement w/angio surgery in November was in surgery 6 hours and in recovery another 6 hours. Was in the hospital 10 days, ICU for 7 days, We about lost her during this one and she has vowed never to have another. Even though she needs both carotids done.

Cost--$99,000. Their insurance paid $11,000 and the rest was wrote off.

It's crazy!! My surgery for breast cancer was $28K not including the 2 surgeons!! If that wasn't bad enough, I spent 5 days in SICU (Special ICU-Really sick people, lady in the bed next to me coded!!

) $48k!!!!

ditto...the UK system and the canadian system are very close as in the way they are run. lets face it when you are really ill the last thing you want to do is worry about if you can afford it..

we dont have a huge problem with waiting times for specialists my mom is currently fighting breast cancer, from the time the lump was found by her to the time she was in to see an oncologist was about 2 weeks, then the testing began 2 - 3 weeks for all of the tests and biopsy and 2 weeks later she had surgery 6 weeks goes by really fast

it's a business, it's not about caring anymore and that's sad, and they say they can't afford to give us nurse's raises yeah, more and more responsibility for the same pay

Oh sure, if you need a serious op then you are bumped to the head of the queue. I meant long waiting lists for "everyday" operations.

thank you ...mom is doing great!!!!

everyday operations...i waited 3 weeks for my surgery to have my gall bladder removed...

and 2 more weeks for my tubes to be tied...(i know TMI)

i waited 3 weeks to get into a foot doctor for my son to have his warts treated on his foot

waiting lists are out there i know this but it all depends on what you want

6 months to a year is not an uncommon time to wait for an op here although they are (supposedly) working hard to bring those down. But still, if you compare that to some of the financial horror stories here, I'm happy to wait!

I had no out of pocket expenses from my c sect or hospital stay. well except for the co pays, which were $15. I have the "bill" someplace an she wasnt cheap.
When I needed to see a podiatrist I called the office made the appt and saw him the same week. $25
The dermatologist was the one with the waiting period Two months.
cardiologist- a month for me. A week for my daughter.

We are lucky. Dh carries the insurance. And just signed up for Aflac.
