I gave mine the sheet pan (filled with water) with the fan blowing right at it but they preferred standing in the wet dirt, so I did what you did and wet the ground some more.I also have used pans with water and the birds will wade in them to cool off. Now I have sprinklers in some of the pens but they do cover all of the pens. It wets the ground to make it cooler.

I don't use the pans anymore, instead I put the sprinklers on to wet the ground/sand in their pens. That picture was taken a long time ago. I did change the water frequently in the pans.I would think a metal pan of water in the sun in FL would get to warm to cool with wading in it?
