Houdans

Pics
I dont know at all, but I'm certianly curious about both now.

On a personal note, does anyone know about what an airport x-ray will do to a fertile egg?
I'm considering taking some "hard boiled" eggs with me next time I travel. hehe

I did some research and the pevaling opinoin is that the modern machines are pretty safe, and any measures of protection would be stripped off and probably re-xrayed depending on the country you are passing through.
The largest hurdle seems to be the import and export regulatoins on food and fowl. Some countries can give you a permit to pass hatching eggs and upon manual inspection they are clear of the scanner, but that wont be happening in my situation, or the US.
Some people have had them treated as any other liquid product to be put in baggies and sent through with obvious ill effect.

Looks like its experiment time, whee~

Not from Houdans, but my first two green eggs~!

Computers dont show it well in this light...

Congratulations!
Its about time, but maybe it was just bad timing of the seasons.
I looked at your farm page and WOW, I'm incredibly jealous.
Also I'm looking at relocating to Maine so maybe I'll be able to come out and see or buy a couple birds when I need to rebuild the flock.
Not sure if I can get anything from my group across the borders.
Canada will have its own trouble, but compared to China, it'll be cake.

I think it may have been the timing. I sure hope that was the case. I got another white egg yesterday. They are a small. I have caught one of the younger girls in the nesting box. The boys are mating everyone in sight. Breeding season is under way!

Congrats on the eggs. I agree you have a beautiful place. I just love getting my one beautiful white egg. I would say it is a medium size. I really need to find a size chart. I think Spike's white eggs are so much prettier than the ones from the store!

I currently have one white layer, a blue Andalusian, I love my pretty little white egg. She is also very consistent, but refuses to use the nest boxes (there are six of them!) I have ordered some houdan hatching eggs that are from U of A stock initially. Crossing fingers that all goes well with that.

I need to catch them in the act!! Breeding pens half done. It's so cold.. This weekend we are getting roughly 12 -15 inches of snow. At least we can work on them in the barn.. nothing better to do.

Good luck with them. That is where ours are from. We had 15 eggs and when I candled at 8 days only removed 2 due to no development but for some reason we only had 4 that hatched. One of those was taken by a snake when it was young and then I ended up with two boys and a girl, so currently we have a boy and a girl. The girl was about 8 mo. old before she began to lay. Then she was daily for a week or two and we had a cold snap and she quit. Now she is back to pretty much daily laying. She has the sweetest personality. She loves to be held. The boys on the other hand are a little bi-polar.

Oh and ditto on the nest boxes. Spike has a spot on the floor behind a cinder block where she "nests". My hubby even observed her putting her head in the cinder block while she was sitting.
