Houdans

Thank you, Chambertin. It is the curly tail feathers that are concerning me! I can't see anything resembling streamers from their crests yet, and their neck feathers which I thought were looking like hackles are actually less pronounced than Queenie's. I agree, I would have expected crowing by now, they are definitely large enough for it. We shall see.

I'm kind of surprised that I haven't heard my roo crowing more since I heard him that first time. It was most definitely him. I was standing right in front of him looking at him when he crowed the second time. I have only heard him one other time. Maybe he just doesn't have his volume turned up yet as I have not heard him from inside the house yet.

Boy it sure would be nice if I could get ahold of half a dozen chicks of good quality to have here.

I'm going to say "boy" ... that comb is way too red, and prominent and developed for a five week old, or even six or seven week old girl.

Nice picture. I see you're in the UK, nice to see a British chick photo.

I thought I'd jump in here. I sold all of my bantam Houdan last year and my LF Whites to a local teenager. He was able to order 25+ chicks from Sandhill to increase his numbers. I'll be helping him select & cull this fall. He's also planning on starting to show. In the future, he will be offering hatching eggs for sale.

I do miss my Houdan sometimes (along with my Crevecoeur) but there just was not enough of a demand/market for them to justify me continuing with them. :(

That's a shame. It's hard to find people who want to work with either Houdans or Crevecoeurs. I'll keep my opinions to myself as we each have to make our own decisions. It is good to hear that the person you sold your birds to plans on continuing with them and that you are helping them along.

When you were working with houdans, how successful breeding and raising them were you?
Frankly, I'm looking for a houdan guru to help me with advice. I have a small flock of 20+ LF Houdan.
