Hounds!

I am getting 2 hound pups in a month or so, two female plott hounds, I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to keep them calm and quiet when I bring them home. I dont mind occasional barking but my last plott just barked all day long even at play time, I know that hounds bark a ton but he was out of control and I would like to prevent it this go round.

They look quite similar to these but much younger!

Most hounds I have known have been quite the barkers. However, for barking, I'm a huge fan of the "It's ok, no more barking" in a firm tone. We've never discouraged barking from our dog for protection purposes (We like to know when someone is at the door or on the property). We usually say "good boy, it's ok" and he knows we've heard him and quiets down.

I'd be interested to hear what others have to say though.

Ya I also like the reinforcement of knowing my hounds will sound off when someone is around, Thats also what my goose does but a hound is more effective to warn others

Yes, they let the whole county know a car drove by. My neighbor has 6 coonhounds, and they bay 24/7
