House Chicken?

I had a single hatchling (chicken) and it definitely imprinted on me, would PEEPEEPEEP any time I wasn't with it. (Mama had abandoned the egg, I hatched it in the house, and tried to give chick back to her, she tried to kill it.) It helped a little to give it a mirror, and keep a radio on. After 3 days I found a feed store that had chicks, and brought home a friend. They became inseparable. Later they were moved out to a small coop next to main one where they could see the others and be integrated over time.

I was going to make a thread on this!!!

This spring I am going to get some silkie (and other Bantam) chicks. I want to raise them from chicks because they are adorable, and I have much more hope for them being friendlier and easier to handle.

And maybe....Just maybe...I can make one or two into house chickens...

I've heard some mixed opinions... a lot of people say it's cruel....

I have a small flock of bantam chickens outside....is there some way that my chicken could live partially with them, or if she was bullied in another spare little coop to get some fresh grass, some sunshine, and a dust bath? I could supervise the chicken a good chunk of the day, she could roam around my house with a diaper I could make or buy, but if school re-opened I'd be out from around 9 am-4 pm....

Can a house chicken live partially outside, or with a flock? Can they live by themselves or do they need a buddy? I would have time to diaper, clean and bathe the chicken, to care for it and cuddle it, and to make sure it got some fresh air and fresh grass, but does that sound suitable?

I have a very small room.....I don't want to diaper the chicken overnight... she needs some time to air out, be comfier and maybe lay her egg every couple days...there is no way a chicken is walking around my room undiapered...my mother would lay an egg...so maybe I could have a smallish cage with some bedding, food, water, and a little perch just overnight???

They are a miniature ornamental chicken.. not a standard barnyard bird. They can't get wet, can't handle extreme cold or heat.. personally i don't think people should put them outside or with a regular flock unless they have a nice temperature/weather controlled area and are only with bantams.

People have said it's cruel about any type of pet to be indoors.. cats (who die much earlier when let out), dogs (who age so much faster when housed outdoors).. parrots, finches... you name it. My house is immaculate because I'm a clean person.. so i can have as many pets as i like.. and YOU are the companion! Although 2 would be great, so they can cuddle.

A rabbit hutch would work just fine, they have a "coop" section in them. Mine have a covered kitty litter box with dirt, lay in the sun, and get fresh veggies every day.. all indoors! I think you should go for it!

Here are mine sunbathing...

You'd be surprised!! The cat might end up being a great cuddler!
I have no other pets...no risk of being eaten by a doggo...I just made an extremely spontaneous decision on the spot....I AM GETTING THE CHICKS TOMORROW OMG YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAAAAAASAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Haven’t picked exactly what breeds...I’m thinking a total of 8...they are all worked, vaccinated, and they replace roos who need a home...

They have an assortment of breeds....silkie, d’uccles, australorps, hamburgs, Easter Eggers, Araucanas....I’M SO CLUCKING EXCITEDDDDD! (pardon the language)

Like, I would pay just to see the chickens and I legit get to keep them ahhh

I’m going to make an excuse at some point to convince my mum to let me make one or two into house chickens....wahahahahaah

And have daily photo shoots with patty-pan tutus.

:wee:p

I don’t be know how I’ll sleep I’m so exciteddddd

Sounds awesome! I recently learned that you don't want vaccinated for backyard flocks, because it can transmit mareks to any unvaccinated birds that come in contact. Once you vaccinate, never let your chickens mix with others outside your home/ yard. Also, you'll have to then vaccinate all future chickens you get. Most places wont even vaccinate bantams st all.

Um.....really? It’ll give them mareks?.?.?.? Oh no.... mine aren’t vaccinated....

The Marek’s vaccine doesn’t give them the virus. However, a vaccinated bird can still get it and not show symptoms, then pass it on to unvaccinated birds.

Yea, i found out after trying to figure out why hatcheries refuse to vaccinate bantams. Then in found out even other countries wont use the vaccine, because ther virus can go "wild" from it. Poultry Farms use it because birds aren't leaving their property (well alive anyway).
