house making us sick? *update*

That's a lot of fuel loss! I hope that gets solved quickly.

If you want to address mold problems, you can use Oxine to help. There is some info on it on the "Fungal Infections" page listed in my sig below. You could mix it with water to spot-spray small areas of mold. For keeping down mold in the air for temporary periods, you can add some Oxine to water in a humidifier.

Best wishes.

get a pro to check for mold... it's wicked stuff, I've got a friend who's got it in her lungs now and it is ruining her health, very hard to treat... do NOT do mold cleanup yourself, if you stir it up and get spores in your lungs it can be very serious.

headaches are a clue to oxygen issues (CO2, leaking flues, burn fumes, oil fumes, etc.) if you can smell the fuel oil, it's leaking or the flue's leaking.

if you're stuffy, sneezy, respiratory issues without the headaches, it's more likely to be other inhaleables (dust, mold, dander).

and you have my sympathy on the moving issue. the guy we lease from just put the house on the market. we have 4 months to find somewhere for goats, sheep, horses, dogs, cats, and all sorts of poultry. blows the heck out of my garden plans as well.

I've always had sinus issues, so I don't. Know if that's been affected. I also want to know what I'm entitled to as far as cost of fuel. Its not fair that I just lost probably $400 due to her crappy furnace.

Where are you looking for a place? In MO? If you are in the Galena/branson area, I might have some friends who could offer temp animal housing if it came down to it. Dogs too, they have anatolains.

yep, looking in MO, somewhere within an hour, more or less, of Bolivar (north of springfield). I will absolutely keep it in mind if we get down to the wire and they've got a buyer... we're not far from branson right now and your kind offer of an introduction is greatly appreciated.

for cost of fuel.. if you've got a fuel leak, I think you've got a good case you're entitled to the amount lost... how to figure it out - track your use once the leak is fixed, calculate your average usage, figure out how much of that $600 went out the wrong way based on that. seems a letgitimate claim.

I was actually chatting with her between posting here and she said let her know if you end up in a bind.
I will def try to get my landlord to compensate us somehow. I know she doesn't have a lot herself, but I shoudnt have to eat this. Even if she'd knock so much off the rent for so many months would be fine with me. If she won't fix this we are going to have to leave. There's no way that we should have to breathe this, nor can we pay $300 a week to have heat.

Didn't know this! Will do asap!
And yes, there is probably mold. Damp old basement, plus a roof leak that is saturating the floorboards under the kitchen tile. I have a feeling the landlord isn't going to have the $ to fix this and its going to force us to move. I am terrified about that since I have eight dogs, three cats andthe poultry. Plus, we don't have a lot of money to drop on another deposit and possibly have to fence again.

It is a massive health violation for the landlord to not fix mold problems, and it is definitely in your tenant rights to get that fixed ASAP. You may have to nag quite a bit, document everything, but it will be worth it. If the landlord cannot get it fixed, because it is an unsafe place to live in, he'll have to fork over your deposit and terminate your lease because any inspector would find a mold infested home unfit for residence. Moving again would be a pain in the butt, so hopefully it gets dealt with.

Also, (depending on what state you live in) You may withhold the rent to use to make repairs or in some cases just withhold the rent until the repairs are made. Check your state laws to see what applies to your situation.

When we were living on the farm, we had a propane leak. Our LL paid for the repairs of the leak, filled half full (while Mom paid the other half) and hadn't had a problem since then. We had the propane guy come out and dig it up until they found a leak, it was rusted thru, made a tiny pin hole, thus propane leak and the coupling that joined the tank to tube. Repaired all of it!

It is the LL's responsibliity to maintain the tank and the lines, making sure it is in working order.

Yes, we can escrow the rent here, but she doesn't have much money herself, so I'm afraid if we do she won't be able to make the repairs. I'm going to offer to pay the repairs and deduct that from rent if she balks.
Our tank is in the basement.
