Couple of things come to mind as far as headaches go...Carbon Dioxide, which is odorless, and also there's a gas called Radon....Both can really be dangerous......
Hope you figure that out. I know they have detectors for carbon Dioxide, but I'm not sure what you would do for the Radon....Perhaps the local health dept would know how to detect the Radon.

Have you noticed any wet spots near the tank or boiler/furnace? If the line goes under the ground from the tank to the boiler/furnace there could be a leak in that meaning the ground it is going into is being contaminated. Might not be the case, but with a leak you will get a strong fuel smell and that will give you a headache and make you tired.
I demanded a professional come to the house and check the furnace and the oil tank. .The furnace guy came yesterday and did a good cleaning and replaced some box part that was rusted out. He doesnt "do" fuel tanks, but he knows a little bit and he found that the lower rear of the tank is rusted and oil is saturating out of it, like a sponge, as well as a leaky valve. He relayed this to the landlord and she isnt happy but is looking at options to either switch us to propane or all electric. Electric would require upgrading/replacing the house wiring, which is really what I am hoping she chooses since we have had one close call with the old knob and tube wiring already.

well, ok. progress. that's good!
the close call thing... YIKES! hope your stuff is insurred... and I'd be keeping the critical things in a safe deposit box, and no critters in the house when you're not home... and regularly tested smoke alarms... and....
that's one thing that scares me a lot... house on fire. frightening.
