housing a sick hen

I had a wounded chicken recovering in a rubbermaid tub for two weeks - what I did was cut a piece of 2x4 just long enough to cross the tub (the short way), set it inside touching the bottom, and duct taped it into place. That way I could put papers down on either side to catch the poop and it kept her clean.

The hen liked it a lot - before I put the "roost" in, she seemed really unhappy and kept wobbling around looking for a good spot to rest.

I can think of a couple ideas! If you just want to use the rubbermaid storage containers- I'd get the longest and biggest you could. Then I'd stack a couple of them on top of each other and cut the bottom out of it and lay a 2X4 across where the two containers meet-- but cut out notches so the 2X4 will sit in the notch in the middle of the containers-- make sense?? I'd cut out some large holes and put wire up instead. Leave the bottom container a solid bin so litter doesn't fall out and cut the heck out of the top container and put in wire and notch it out for the perch. I drew it out-- hope this helps.. You could drill a couple of holes where the containers meet up and then use carbingers or clips to keep it closed. The drawing isn't the best-- but thought it was an idea that might be hard to describe!

Or... Lowes has Large dog crates on sale right now! They are at the top end of $60 and they are huge! You could slat a board thru the wires to give you a perch and then you'd be done NO hassle or cutting or figuring out a way to do things.

I'd also check on CraigsList and look for used Kennels or crates, etc... might come up with some good ideas or find a large crate for cheap. You might need it later, anyway! So it would be worth the investment.
