Housing Bantams and heavies together

Anyone have turkeys as well? I've been reading that you should keep turkeys separate from other poultry due to disease.

We've considered adding turkeys later on, but now not sure if it's a good idea.

We got in to this topic at the wedding I was at this weekend.
Now I was on here and seen were a lady had a wild turkey in her coop with her hens just hanging out like company she remarked.
This stared a huge topic this weekend.I got every thing from turkeys will kill your chicken to
that you can breed turkeys and chickens.

Anyone else know about the turkey chicken breed ?

Let me be one of the first to warn you...

Raising chickens is SOOOOooooo addicting! Once you start looking at all the different breeds of standard sized chickens, you want a few different kinds. Then you see the cute little Bantams and just HAVE TO have a few. The problem with Bantams is they are straight run, which means you don't know what you are getting, and chances are pretty good you'll end up with more cockerels than you wanted! Okay, so maybe that doesn't happen to everybody, but it is what happened to me! LOL! Now I have 11 standards and 23 Bantams!

Because of my new addiction/obsession, I had to have a "talk" with my hubby today about what space I have for the chickens, and how much more I need. This man has been a SAINT and now has dedicated himself to building ANOTHER coop (this time an 8x8).

Thank goodness for those who love the insane, or I'd be alone forever!

When I've had different chickens together haven't had any real problems. Do what the others have suggested and you'll be just fine, and so will your chickens!

LOL! I'm right there with you! No, it's not chickens yet...but there is insanity just the same! And my DH is wonderful.

OF COURSE I was ready to throttle him at the start of all this. A few years ago I really wanted chickens. He was not crazy about the idea and talked me out of it. Then a few weeks ago he said "I think we need to get some chickens." WHAT?? I said "No way! I don't need one more thing to worry about." But then I started thinking about it. And then I started reading about it. And THEN I found BYC. And yesterday we got all the supplies to make a 4x12x2 run.

And yes, I can see where I might get in trouble. Went to the show in Lebanon Indiana this weekend and there were SOOOO many neat birds! And not JUST the chickens. I WANT a Toulouse goose!!! NOW!!

And my 15yo son just fell in love with the bantam ducks. (squealed like a preteen girl when he saw them!)

BUT, I'm starting out with just chickens. Keeping myself limited to 5 or 6 for this fall/winter. (well 10 at the most!!) And no chicks till spring. Just pullets, no roos. Unless I end up getting a pair of barred rock bantams from a guy on the boards. But that will be the ONLY roo! Putting my foot down on that one!

Wish the sun would come up a bit faster! I wanna get out there and work on the run this morning!
