How about a Thread for Embdens?

My girl seems to have put on a few pounds. Most of it, I think, is just filling out to her adult size and weight. Some of it though, I think is from less grazing available so eating more feed. I'm going to try to make a hot box or 2 to grow some greens/wheat grass for her, she has an acre to roam over and gets plenty of exercise and what little grass there is for her to nibble on. They get peas a few times a week, and I've cut back to just a little corn. Should I add more oats in with her feed? Poor little plump goose, lol.
She is so pretty, I was thinking you had more than one goose. She doesn't look over weight at all and like you said she is just filling out, I have been using Iains recipe about feeding she got from her vet, using Flock raiser with whole corn, I feed the whole corn as a snack in the late afternoon. I was feeding whole oats but the scratch grains I put into my fermented feed[FR/scratch grains/ split peas[dried] has w/oats in it so haven't been buying w/oats for a while. But they were eating them when I was buying them. She makes me think of my Toulouse goose Missy she is 9 months old now and has filled out like your girl. To compensate for lack of greens i have been buying those large bags of Romaine lettuce at Sams for a nice green treat.

I cant use to much corn... I've a Roman goose that gains weight waaaay to fast I think it's something to do with the smaller breeds. So I use her to tell me if they are getting to much goodies or not enough exercise

I do have another goose, she's just my only domestic goose for now. She'll be a year old in less that a month, so after discussing it with Psue I think she just filled out/matured too. Fast, like overnight, lol. Even in her pics from a month ago she looked like a gangly little girl, and now she's pretty solid and thick.
I agree with Miss L, she doesn't look fat to me either.
Thanks. It's amazing how fast they grow. First as babies, and then again now. You would think something so big would grow more slowly, lol.

Oh, and how is the fermented feed working out for everyone Miss lydia? I was doing soaked/fermented oats until it got cold and they were freezing too fast. I was pretty impressed with what I'd read about fermented food though, and am wanting to try again when it gets nice. The fermented feed threads move too fast/repeat the same stuff too much for me to keep up with, and they are aimed at chickens, so it's nice to see someone with waterfowl using it.

Tivona was the one who got me interested when she said she was feeding it to her ducks and geese, so I thought I'd try it, At first the ducks and geese were not impressed but after about a month I took the dry feed away completely and they gobble it up like it is candy. It's so easy to do too. I started with the 2 bucket method but have been using just 1 bucket now and like it much better. I have to use heated dog bowls to feed it when the temps drop into mid 30's.

warm food in the winter for geese?

I started a thread asking this question but the only response I got was from someone who doesn't have geese. I will have a 15 x 30 yard for the geese exclusively. Is this enough room for a pair of geese and their goslings? How big of a shelter will they need? I plan to put a kiddie pool for them.

Breeding question: are geese like other animals and unable to be bred to relatives? If I wanted to sell breeding pairs, would I need two pairs to so the breeding pair are not related?
