Hang in there. DH got laid off in November after 20 years. This version of business is not good for anyone. They need to make a profit "this quarter". Many businesses seem to have cannibalized themselves out of business by never reinvesting in the company. In DHs case they had once had a self sustaining pension plan. During the early 90s they got bought and the plan was raided. Now they say since the plan is essentially gone they don't want the responsibility of having to fund it. The pension payments are a "huge liability" and will bankrupt them.
Allowing companies to raid pension plans was the worst thing Reagan did. Most of what people are so angry about in under funded pension plans came about when firms were allowed to raid them swearing that they could make more money off that pool of funds and it would be easy to pay it back! Yeah right.
The automakers and many other big firms had self sustaining pensions.
Anyway, you are getting good advice. Keep your eye on the benefits he is entitled to. Sign up for any and all you qualify for. We signed the kids up for CHIP so our COBRA would not be so high. We refiled for our 90 day supply of meds as soon as we could so we'd at least have them if we had to drop the COBRa later. Good luck!
