How are we going to make it?

Hang in there. DH got laid off in November after 20 years. This version of business is not good for anyone. They need to make a profit "this quarter". Many businesses seem to have cannibalized themselves out of business by never reinvesting in the company. In DHs case they had once had a self sustaining pension plan. During the early 90s they got bought and the plan was raided. Now they say since the plan is essentially gone they don't want the responsibility of having to fund it. The pension payments are a "huge liability" and will bankrupt them.

Allowing companies to raid pension plans was the worst thing Reagan did. Most of what people are so angry about in under funded pension plans came about when firms were allowed to raid them swearing that they could make more money off that pool of funds and it would be easy to pay it back! Yeah right.

The automakers and many other big firms had self sustaining pensions.

Anyway, you are getting good advice. Keep your eye on the benefits he is entitled to. Sign up for any and all you qualify for. We signed the kids up for CHIP so our COBRA would not be so high. We refiled for our 90 day supply of meds as soon as we could so we'd at least have them if we had to drop the COBRa later. Good luck!

I have WHAT in my yard? :

Not true. Individuals do not pay for unemployment insurance. COMPANIES pay that expense (and it is not optional)

Yes, companies pay it, but they count it as part of your compensation and in many states employees DO pay into UI as well.

Unemployment is considered a payroll expense.

It's never been listed as part of the compensation package for either my husband or me, and our business has never considered it as such, either.

OHHHH I'm so happy I could just squeal!!!

Ask and you shall receive!!!!

I posted an ad about 2 hours ago on our local CL

And within an hour and a half I had not one.... not two... but three people offering us posts, wire fencing (of some sort), fencing material and a free chair to boot! So.... the chicken's are staying where they belong...at home with their human (plus 1 chihuahua) family.

I just can't get over how lucky we are to have people like these three that are this kind and generous in our community. I'm going to leave the post up for now because we don't know if what we will be collecting will be enough yet but man! How frickin cool was that?!

My DH lost his job in Oct/09 it was hard he got his unemployment and then started school we lost the Unemployment for 7 weeks while they made sure his schooling was okay then got it back plus the back 7 weeks now his unemployment has run out and we have to wait and see if he gets the extension it has been hard but luckily we have a roommates and then our daughter who is disabled has her SSI and then our oldest daughter moved home so with everyone working together we have been able to keep a roof over our heads and food on our plates even been able to add to our flock, and we are building a new coop we used old pallets for most of the wood for the coop and reused other materials that we could get but we did spend money on the flooring we used the recycled decking that does not rot or breakdown it can be washed so that was the most expensive part of the coop but the chickens not only give us eggs they are great entertainment since we don't have T.V. anymore. there are many ways to help save money that can help lower your out go, I make my own laundry soap and we hang clothes up when the weather allows we also buy things at the store when they are marked down I reuse as much as I can and having been working on making things from scratch also I am planting a garden this year just by adjusting and doing small things the pennies add up I am sure things will get better for you and your family just take it one day at time and see what you can do to save money here is a site that is great to help with the frugal things in life www.frugalvillage.com there are great people on the site and the forums are alot of help. good luck keep you head up and remember this to shall pass.

hang in there! HUGS!!! i know it sucks and its sooo stressful!
We are going through the same thing - DH laid off - luckily for us though EI in Canada is a relatively easy process to get and hubby was sitting in the EI office 10 minutes after he got laid off.
I managed to land a part time job at a grocery store which in a few more months will give me 10% off my groceries and benefits.
We have cut back alot!
call every company you deal with for bills if you get behind and let them know - alot of them will give you some leniency.
Also if your looking for freebies for around the house to help out
check Freecycle in your area.
Hope things look up for you and Dh has success in finding a job

Honestly..go for the unemployment benefits...
My hubby is a sheet metal worker and they are ALWAYS getting laid off... Because hes a journey man and they make more money then the apprentices... so the journey men are always the first to go on a job...
But he never has any trouble collecting unemployment... I bet your hubby wont have any problems either. They have to have a REASON why they would deny it...
and as long as your husband wasnt let go for doing something wrong..(which i'm sure he wasnt..) ..then.. he will be able to collect. Good luck!
